Book "Jewelry Design in Rhinoceros"

Release of a Russian-language edition and an exclusive interview with the author!

I'm rushing home in anticipation of something special! In the back seat there is a long-awaited package, and in it is that same book! I've been waiting for it for about three months, having bought it pre-release, and in just a few minutes I'll be immersed in reading it! This is, perhaps, the first book on jewelry modeling in Rhino, not only in Russia, but in the world in general, and now I have it in my hands! I myself am perplexed by my childish delight, because it is extremely difficult to surprise me with something in Rhino or how to build jewelry using this program. But that is why I am experiencing such emotions now - I am holding in my hands a book by a real master, who, believe me, has something to surprise you with!

So meet, friends, Eliania Rosetti , a jewelry designer from sunny Brazil!;) Participant and winner of numerous international jewelry design competitions, a teacher with many years of experience at Rhino and simply a wonderful, cheerful and sympathetic person! How do I know? Read on!

When I received information that this book was about to be published in Russian, I became interested in finding out details about the author, fortunately, it was not difficult to do. It was especially interesting to look at Senora Rosetti’s Facebook page - there’s just a sea of photos, some of which can only be envied, for example, a photo where the author stands in front of the Rhino McNeel office in Miami or in general with Robert McNeil himself, an interview with which, taken by a journalist from one thematic resource, I once published on my blog a long time ago!

And then an idea came to me: why don’t I ask Senora Rosetti to give an interview for you, my dear readers? No sooner said than done! Our heroine, as I noted above, turned out to be extremely responsive and agreed without hesitation!

So, welcome, an exclusive interview with Eliana Rosetti!

Eliania Rosetti outside McNeel's Miami office.

Vitaly Kavaz-ogly: Senora Rosetti, please tell us a little about yourself and how you started your creative journey? Is jewelry art your first and only profession?

Eliania Rosetti: Since childhood, I have shown an ability and interest in the arts and crafts. I was born in Minas Gerais, a Brazilian state rich in precious stones and gold, and made my debut in the field of jewelry design and production there. I developed my knowledge of jewelry over 12 years while living in Belo Horizonte, the capital of Minas Gerais, home to many award-winning designs in Brazil.

In 1996, I moved to Sao Paulo, the largest city in Brazil, and since then I have been developing projects for the jewelry industry. That same year, I took up computer graphics using Corel Draw and similar 2D design programs. In 2000, I became acquainted with 3D design and continue to be interested in new developments. Since starting to use Rhinoceros to design my jewelry in 2002, I have become an expert in the program.

Vitaly Kavaz-ogly: Do you remember what event in your life, in your opinion, was the most serious breakthrough in your professional activity?

Eliania Rosetti: The introduction of 3D technologies has created new work opportunities. Modeling was a new step in my career, but the most significant advancement was the development of 3D printers for jewelry. This technology revolutionized the development of my creative potential and opened up vast horizons for bold exploration and innovation.

Vitaly Kavaz-ogly: I’m sure the book “Designing Jewelry with Rhinoceros” became just one of such events! Can you tell us how you came up with the idea to write this book? How long did it take you to decide on this and what was the most difficult thing on the way to realizing this idea?

Eliania Rosetti: The book was born from the desire to share experiences with young designers. After developing several projects for the Brazilian jewelry industry, I was asked to educate and train young professionals due to the lack of schools for people interested in learning this new technology and its capabilities. This is how I discovered my talent and love for teaching. I started teaching classes for designers and soon the idea of writing a book came to mind. After Rene Rodriguez from Leon Publisher invited me to collaborate in this direction, the idea became a reality. Their technical support made it possible to realize my plan. In the book, I share fifteen years of jewelry modeling experience and five years of teaching experience.

Vitaly Kavaz-ogly: Your book has become a bestseller in the global jewelry community. Now the Russian-speaking part of it has finally had the opportunity to get to know her. By the way, I have already purchased one copy for myself and am waiting for its arrival any day now! What do you think made the book such an amazing success all over the world?

Eliania Rosetti: Initially, my desire was to share my knowledge in the field of 3D jewelry design with talented people interested in professional growth. I did my best to realize this vision, but the help and guidance of my editor, Rene Rodriguez, was also extremely important. This is a first foray into this area, and we have strived to make the book as simple as possible, allowing beginners unfamiliar with the technology to become familiar with best practices in using design tools. My previous teaching experience was a critical component of the book's success.

Vitaly Kavaz-ogly: As far as I managed to form an impression of you in the process of preparing for the interview, you are first and foremost a creator and secondarily a 3D modeler. Correct me if I'm wrong. Where do you get ideas for your collections? What inspires you most?

Eliania Rosetti: Yes, you are right – art always comes first. 3D design is just a tool with which I realize my ideas. You can always master the technique, but the creative process itself is much broader. I try to draw ideas from as many sources as possible, but the choice depends on the direction of each specific collection. Brazil is a country that provides a wealth of inspiration, from nature to cultural diversity. This is where I try to draw inspiration as often as possible. Sometimes I find inspiration in world architecture, in particular modern architecture. History, especially the Baroque style, is another such source.

Vitaly Kavaz-ogly: The Eliania Rosetti brand has become recognizable all over the world, and your jewelry has more than once become winners or prize-winners of various exhibitions. Such popularity often causes envy. Tell me, do you often encounter this feeling on the part of your colleagues?

Eliania Rosetti: Actually, I don't have a brand. In this regard, when collaborating with the jewelry industry, my name often does not even appear in the collection. But this is my own decision. I want my work to bring me recognition from clients. But I have other collections that bear my name. Of course, envy is a natural feeling in humans, but a good designer knows how to recognize quality work. Therefore, both envy and praise are forms of recognition.

Vitaly Kavaz-ogly: Another aspect of popularity is plagiarism. Do you know of cases where your work has been plagiarized and other artists have clearly borrowed elements of your design? How do you generally feel about this phenomenon?

Eliania Rosetti: Plagiarism is a global problem that affects all creative fields. Of course, in my career I also faced this problem, like other masters. I believe that stricter methods of copyright protection need to be used. In many countries, including Brazil, these methods do not work in practice. The designer's name is hidden, license fees (royalties) are not made, and factories often make their own changes without the author's permission. This is a real problem we face, but a solution will only be found when all designers come together to fight it.

Vitaly Kavaz-ogly: What are you working on at the moment? Should we expect new collections or books from Eliania Rosetti in the near future? Maybe there is some official Internet resource where you can find out the latest news in your area of professional activity?

Eliania Rosetti: Now I am completely focused on creating collections for two Brazilian jewelry factories and conducting trainings for students. Besides that, I'm preparing something new for 2015, but for now it's a secret. I can only hint that this will be a very useful tool for jewelers all over the world.

Vitaly Kavaz-ogly: What would you like to wish your Russian-speaking readers and fans?

Eliania Rosetti: I hope that my book can help gifted Russian artists working in the field of professional design. I know how poor the technical literature on this subject is, and I hope that my combined 25 years of experience can also contribute to the development of creative individuality. I would be extremely pleased to know that my book helped someone grow to the level of a true professional recognized in the Russian market.
