I don’t have any single formula for setting prices. Rather, I try to estimate how much I would buy such jewelry for myself. I would like to get away from this pattern and plan more. Sometimes a piece of jewelry is very expensive to produce, but I want people to be able to buy it, to have it available, so I put in a very small margin. And some jewelry is so difficult to make, and I understand that we cannot make them in large quantities, and they must be rare, and then we raise the price a little in order to regulate the demand for them.

Which equipment to choose

Retail outlets that sell jewelry made from precious metals must have a barcode scanner and a cash register connected to the Internet for online operation. Each performed operation is automatically recorded in the unified accounting program simultaneously with the check issuance - the data is received through the fiscal operator.

When choosing a cash register, the priority criteria are sales volumes and the intensity of customer traffic. Now I have two production facilities - the workshop where I studied and the jewelry factory that fulfills my orders. Now ten masters work with me constantly.

I also have an assistant who performs operational tasks: she works on the website, organizes delivery, and communicates with store buyers.

How to Prepare for Change

Taking into account the latest news, the law on labeling of jewelry, goods and decorations, which defines the rules from 2021, currently leaves room for business to maneuver. The postponement will allow enterprises to efficiently organize the transition to the new system without technical difficulties and in compliance with all legislative norms.

To register in the accounting program, you must submit an application by filling out an online form on the operator’s website and signing it using an electronic signature. The review period is no more than three working days - if a positive decision is made, the operator enters the applicant into the GIIS DMDK register, providing access to his personal account and sending a corresponding notification.

A crisis

To be optimistic, in the category we chose, jewelry of this design is made only by imported brands, which have now become much more expensive. Perhaps my design or that of my colleagues will simply become more accessible in relation to Western brands. And buyers who previously chose Western brands will switch to local manufacturers.

If you look pessimistically, there will be fewer spontaneous purchases. On the other hand, we began to travel less and I want to somehow please ourselves, even while staying at home. So we'll see.

What exactly will need to be marked?

How Jewelry Tracking Will Work

The accounting algorithm within the standard cycle of manufacturing, processing, delivery and sale of jewelry products determines the performance of a number of actions by each of the market participants.

Mining company

Organizations engaged in production, as well as customers of complex processing services:

  • form raw materials batches;
  • send a request for codes and mark each package;
  • labeled raw materials are shipped.

Product manufacturing

The refining procedure is designed to clean the precious metal from existing impurities, which ultimately increases its value. This service does not provide for the transfer of ownership. A mandatory condition is confirmation of the last fact of receipt of refined precious metal with the provision of relevant information to the GIIS DMDK.

Wholesalers and buyers

They register the change of ownership after receiving jewelry from the manufacturer or individual, and divide the received products for subsequent distribution.

Retail store

Accepts goods from counterparties, which can be wholesale and manufacturing organizations, as well as purchasing offices. If the seller has doubts that the defect is a factory defect and did not arise through the fault of the buyer, then it may be necessary to conduct an examination. As a general rule, the examination is carried out by the seller at his own expense, and the buyer can be present to make sure that everything is done fairly.

If the examination proves that there is a manufacturing defect, the buyer, at his choice, can receive a similar, but high-quality decoration or money back.

Monitoring system

Labeling of gold (as well as other) jewelry in Russia by 2022 should ensure the functioning of a system in which each market participant records the transactions he performs in the accounting register. It is worth emphasizing that when registering for special registration, as well as when deregistering from it, information about the enterprise is checked in detail by the tax service, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Rosfinmonitoring.

Implementation timeframe

As already mentioned, the government responded to industry feedback and decided to make concessions for business. As a result, in 2021 in Russia, markings on jewelry made of gold and other precious metals and stones are implemented in a trial format, allowing each organization to voluntarily prepare and join the GIIS DMDK. The mandatory registration date is March 1, 2022.

  • There was a factory behind our network, everything was very strict there, so there were no fakes. How can you recognize a fake? If another stone is inserted, you will not know about it, only a specialist will figure it out. There is a tag - a document where it is written which stone is precious, semi-precious, artificial or natural. We trust our factory and our suppliers. Everything is also written on the alloy - both the sample and the name of the plant, all this is visible. It is impossible to distinguish whether an alloy is good or bad - this can only be done by a gemologist, a special person using professional equipment. If you need to test gold, there is a special reagent - this solution is used to test it in a pawnshop. And you will not be able to find out what kind of alloy is mixed in this alloy. For example, sample 585 means that the alloy contains 58.5% gold, the rest is an alloy, an admixture: silver, palladium, zinc, nickel... And you don’t know what was mixed in there - maybe more copper, or maybe silver?
  • The price should depend on this, but it may be too high. Sometimes you can see by the color - in one plant the chains are pinker because of copper, and in another they are yellower because of zinc. But this is not very noticeable, and we only see a sample confirming that the jewelry really contains gold, the name of the plant, and whether the jewelry has been approved by the state inspection - this is indicated by the symbol in the form of a girl with a kokoshnik. Imported items usually only bear hallmark markings, which makes you wonder where the jewelry came from. And if you don’t find a sample, then you can’t take it.
  • You can also say about the quality - there was one supplier, his products were cheaper, and the earrings bent in the hands, the locks had to be adjusted in front of the buyer, straightened so that the lock would click. This happens when the gold is very thin, very few grams.
  • Sunlight, which gets a lot of criticism, is made in China. I cannot say that there is something wrong there. This is really gold, there was even an examination on TV, they said everything was fine. The only complaint was that they had a lot of small pebbles that often fell out. But this is a problem with setting stones - some hold stones well, while others use glue. Therefore, when you buy a product, you need to make sure that it has good fastenings and high-quality casting.

How to spot a fake?

  • After many years of working in a jewelry store, I began to understand jewelry better, I always go to showrooms and study. But still, no one is safe from counterfeiting. If you bought something, you can go and check with a gemologist, but a good fake will not show itself in any way, you will not see the difference if only the alloy begins to darken. We have never had any counterfeits, but if they were discovered, the store would probably be closed. There was a Turkish store in one of the shopping centers, and they found a fake. After this, the store closed, the products were seized, and the owners were fined.
  • It is better for the buyer to carefully inspect the product himself. The seller can sing, talk, dissuade anything. Of course, he will say that you need to wear jewelry carefully, take off rings when cooking dinner or washing dishes, the floor, you shouldn’t hit the table, and if you handle it carefully, nothing will happen.
  • Many girls came with blue topaz and said: “Look what a nightmare I have with the stone, it’s all cloudy, the color has disappeared, it’s all covered in some scratches, your product is of poor quality.” But in fact, the girl simply wore this ring around: she washed dishes and the floor in it, chopped salads and did whatever she wanted. And it is not recommended to wear it even in bright sunshine; the stone fades. You need to understand that when you buy jewelry, you should wear it when you go out, and when you come home, put it away in the box. The second option is nanoengraving on the metal surface, carried out by FPP using special laser equipment.
The dimensions of the identifier, which also serves as a QR code, do not exceed 1 square millimeter, so the marking of jewelry will not affect its value and appearance. Only luxury grows

In the first quarter of 2021, sales of expensive diamond jewelry increased by 20% compared to the same period in 2020, says Dmitry Dosko, commercial director of the Adamas jewelry store chain. Quantitatively, sales have decreased, he confirms. But the growth of the average receipt (both due to the cost of a unit of goods sold and the number of items in the receipt) outweighs this drop by almost half. “Our revenue from operating stores now exceeds the values ​​of 2021,” Dosko assures.
