“Gypsy”, “smolyak”, “black crystal” - all this is the name of one of the rare stones - morion. The stone has been known since ancient times.

The name of the stone is of Greek origin from “morysso” - to blacken.

Description

Ural craftsmen nicknamed morion “tar” for its characteristic fracture lines, reminiscent of gypsy curls. In mineralogy, its name is smoky or black quartz. Its properties and features are explained by the content of iron and titanium compounds in its composition. They also give the mystical crystal a unique deep color. Unprocessed morion stone has characteristic brown stains on a black field.

The mineral has a density of up to 2.68 g/cm3 and a refractive index of 1.56. Physical properties are similar to all quartz rocks. Morion has a piezoelectric effect. If you subject it to compression, charges with different signs appear on opposite faces. When stretched, the poles change.

A characteristic feature is the lack of transparency of the crystal. This is how morion differs from its “brother” - transparent rauchtopaz. At high temperatures it completely loses its color, acquiring the transparency of rock crystal, and under the influence of average temperatures it becomes golden citrine. Smoky quartz should not be kept in direct sunlight due to the risk of discoloration.

Deposits were found in the Urals and Transbaikalia, the North Caucasus and Kazakhstan. Gems are mined in Madagascar, Ukraine, Brazil, the USA and Canada. At the Volodarsko-Volynskoe deposit in Ukraine, blocks weighing up to 10 tons were found. But the largest crystal - about 70 tons - was discovered in Kazakhstan.

Black quartz can be mistaken for obsidian, but the latter never has the crystal lattice inherent in quartz gems.
