Sardonyx is a stone popular since antiquity.

Sardonyx is a stone from the chalcedony group, a type of onyx.
They began to use it in the era of antiquity. For example, Roman generals and politicians made seals from it, who valued the mineral for the fact that it does not stick to wax and sealing wax. Of course, the use of stone was not limited to seals. It was also used to make jewelry, the oldest of which are hundreds of years old. The crystal was used in magic and lithotherapy, as a talisman. We will talk about all this and who the properties of sardonyx are suitable for further.

Historical reference

The mineral received its unusual name back in the 7th century BC thanks to the city that is considered its original source - Sardu (today the territory of Turkey). This majestic city was once the capital of the glorious Lydian kingdom.

Do you know that the Holy Scriptures of the Bible mention sardonyx as the fifth foundation of the Great Heavenly Jerusalem.

Due to its rejuvenating properties, as well as the ability to renew the body at all levels, sardonyx was a revered mineral of ancient kings and nobles. A large number of jewelry with this gem were found in the treasuries of the Egyptian ruler Cleopatra. This is no accident, because Cleopatra knew a lot about jewelry, possessing the secrets of eternal youth and beauty.

In addition to the Egyptian beauty, the scientist Ptolemy, as well as the emperor of Ancient Rome Tiberius, owned sardonyx products. Alexandrian carvers used sardonyx plates to carve portraits of gods.

The Middle Ages brought no less glory to the mineral - the nugget was used by alchemists, jewelers, sculptors, and magicians. Jewelry, decorative items, talismans were made from the stone, and a number of diseases were healed with it. The mineral was popular for creating seals and glyptics (artistic carvings).

This is interesting!

There is an interesting story connected with sardonyx that happened with the artist Benvenuto Cellini. This man created a gem of incredible beauty, on which he depicted the canonical subject of the Gospel - the Last Supper. To create this work of art, he once had to briefly disappear from the Vatican, causing the Pope to be angry and indignant.

Upon the artist’s return, abusive speeches awaited him, in response to which Cellini silently presented his masterpiece. Dad was amazed at the craftsmanship of the work - every stripe, spot and vein of multi-colored stone was used to characterize the characters.

So, Jesus was dressed in a white robe, the Apostle Peter was depicted in red, and John in blue. Judas received a gloomy brown tunic. But what was most striking was the idea that a stone that no one needed, lying under our feet for years, was used in the most inventive way.

Benvenuto Cellini was forgiven, proclaiming him the favorite son of the church. To this day, in the altar of the main vestibule of the Cathedral of the Apostle Peter, side by side with gems from all times of Christianity, a majestic work of art by a talented artist flaunts.

In mineralogy, sardonyx is considered a type of onyx; among jewelers, it is a semi-precious gem. The formation of stone originates deep in the bowels of the Earth, where deposits of quartz sand were sintered and compressed under the influence of temperature, pressure, time, and then came to the surface during mountain building processes.

Origin story

The history of the origin of sardonyx goes back to the distant past, namely in the period BC. During excavations on the territory of the ancient city of Sardis (Turkey), archaeologists managed to stumble upon jewelry with this mineral.

Scientists agreed that the stone received its name in honor of this city.

Many mineralogists are confident that sardonyx is so called because it has some similarities with sardis and onyx.

In ancient times this stone was very popular. In Rome, many influential figures had sardonyx seals. Women of different ages adored various jewelry with this mineral.

Sardonyx was one of the most sought-after stones by alchemists, who used the stone to conduct numerous experiments. The stone was in demand among healers who knew the secrets of infusing miraculous water on this mineral.

Around the 14th century, sardonyx gained incredible popularity. Jewelers did not always have time to fulfill orders from clients who wanted to own precious jewelry with this stone.

Rich ladies could afford entire sets consisting of earrings, beads, and bracelets. Almost all the houses of wealthy citizens had cups and figurines made of sardonyx.

They emphasized the good taste of the owners and were a sign that the owners lived prosperously.

Mineral deposits

Sardonyx
India is considered the main source of sardonyx.

Stone is also mined in other places:

  • Brazil;
  • USA;
  • Arabian Peninsula;
  • Uruguay;
  • Argentina.

There are few deposits of sardonyx in Russia. The stone was found in Chukotka and in the Kolyma River basin. The stone cannot be classified as a rare mineral, since it is present in all corners of the globe. Despite this, the gem is mined exclusively in places where it is profitable from an economic point of view.

Note

Over the centuries-old history of the mineral, sardonyx has been loved by people of all classes. It is surprising that a gem, not on the same level as precious stones, was so revered by the rulers of entire nations of different eras. Apparently, there is something truly enchanting and attractive in this nugget.

Physical and chemical properties

Sardonyx
The main distinguishing feature of the gem is the presence of parallel, light lines that form an interesting pattern on the stone. Contrasting layering is the main feature that distinguishes sardonyx from other minerals. In it, stripes of dark shades alternate with light layers.

The main element that makes up the mineral is silicon dioxide. Impurities of calcium, aluminum, magnesium and other substances are responsible for the different colors of the gem stripes. Iron and its compounds color the layers in red-brown shades. Brown tones are acquired due to aluminosilicates, and light tones are acquired due to oxides of non-ferrous metals.

The luster of the gem is assessed as glassy or waxy. However, in a natural mineral it is weakly expressed - the stone shines more only after processing.

Types and shades of sardonyx

The color range of sardonyx includes the following shades:

  • scarlet;
  • orange;
  • pink;
  • dark brown;
  • white;
  • lactic;
  • brown.

There are 2 types of mineral:

  1. Male - dark colors predominate in color, and the pattern is clearer.
  2. Women's - stones with a soft, light color and blurred pattern.

The color of the crystals depends on the presence of impurities: iron gives a reddish tint, aluminum silicate - brown and brown. Light layers are obtained due to impurities of other minerals.

Colors and types of stone

White sardonyx
Mineral is divided into two types: female and male. The former are used for making paired jewelry, the latter for amulets and rings. Very small stones are used to make beads.

Sardonyx comes in a variety of colors:

  • white;
  • brown;
  • pink;
  • brown.

Important!

The most expensive stones are those that have a pattern on them.

Color palette

Sardonyx is a mineral with many shades and combinations. Many people confuse it with agate, but the difference between these stones is noticeable - sardonyx is characterized by wider stripes, while the contrast between the layers is maximum.

The color range of sard varies from warm, light orange tones to red-brown, brown or almost black shades. Such bright colors are interspersed with light layers, white, white-pink, blue.

Where is sardonyx used?

The only area of application of the stone is aesthetics and beauty:

  • Master stone cutters place the multi-layered structure of the stone in the first place. Especially if among the layers of the gem there is a milky one: this expands the range of subjects and allows you to show personal mastery.
  • For jewelers it is an ornamental stone; the best specimens are considered semi-precious.

Particularly prized are large translucent stones with alternating orange, cherry, purple, pink and brown hues.

Jewelry sets are of particular importance, since it is difficult to choose inserts of a suitable texture. The price of sardonyx parures increases several times compared to single products.

Collectors like decorative or jewelry that is “not in good condition”: these pieces are the most unusual.

Sardonyx jewelry and its effect on humans

Sardonyx jewelry
Sardonyx jewelry looks very impressive. However, the stone cannot be combined with all precious metals, which is not known to everyone.

Jewelry in silver or cupronickel are reliable talismans. But in platinum or gold, the magical significance of sardonyx practically disappears.

Let's talk in more detail about sardonyx jewelry:

  • Rings made from this crystal can be worn by women regardless of age. Such jewelry will protect its owner from gossip and intrigues.
  • Earrings with miniature stones should be purchased for young girls, and large earrings should be purchased for older ladies. Such jewelry will protect you from frivolous actions.
  • Thin bracelets are one of the best jewelry for thin hands. Heavier products will look harmonious on chubby hands. However, in any case, the bracelet will protect against all kinds of negativity.
  • The beads will ideally highlight the femininity and beauty of the neck, and will also be a reliable talisman that will instill in its owner the thought of her unearthly beauty.
  • Brooches made of sardonyx are very popular. They are not only a stylish decoration, but also protect their owner from viral diseases.
  • A pendant on a long chain will protect the wearer from heart disease.
  • Cufflinks made of dark crystals will go perfectly with any shirt. Such a talisman will instill self-confidence in a man and help him make difficult decisions.

Areas of application for sardonyx

Sardonyx is widely used in the manufacture of mosaics and finishing slabs.
Natural stone makes beautiful vessels, jugs and figurines. The physical properties of the mineral have made it possible to make seals based on it since ancient times. In addition, sardonyx is very popular in jewelry; inserts from it decorate rings, necklaces, bracelets, earrings and beads. They also make special balls from sardonyx for therapeutic massage.

Stone cost

Sardonyx beads
An ornamental gem is valued in grams: a processed stone on the world market costs $9–12 per gram.

If we look at it in detail, the prices for jewelry are approximately as follows:

  • cabochon (18x13 mm, 1.2 g; Amur region) – $5;
  • bracelet – $8-20;
  • brooch (insert 4–5 cm; silver-plated cupronickel) – $15-20;
  • beads – $25-50;
  • ring (silver plated cupronickel) – $10-20;
  • earrings – $10-25;
  • ball (50 mm, Botswana) – $50.

Uruguayan sardonyx insert (60–80 g, 75–80x30–35x10–15 mm) can be purchased for $10-15.

Fakes

What is fashionable is counterfeited. Sardonyx (products made from it) have been counterfeited for a long time. Craftsmen glued multi-colored plates from cheap minerals.

Now these stones are not in great demand; their prices are low. There is no point in counterfeiting it - it will cost more.

In addition, natural sardonyx looks so that it is almost impossible to make a good imitation.

Sometimes agates are offered instead of elegant sardonyx. This is not a fake, but you can tell the minerals apart from each other. The stripes of sardonyx are very clear and strongly contrast in color. The range of colors is rich and bright.

Cameo Gonzaga - the most famous sardonyx product

The multilayer structure made sardonyx a valuable source for glyptics - the art of stone carving. It originated three centuries BC in Ancient Greece. The “subjects” were episodes of life, portraits of gods and heroes, landscapes.

The most famous sardonyx product is the Gonzaga cameo. It is a portrait of the brother and sister Ptolemy and Arsinoe. They were also consorts and rulers of Ancient Egypt.

Cameo Gonzaga

The cameo is unique for three reasons:

  1. Dimensions (the largest in the world, 15.7x11.8x3 cm).
  2. Three-layer pattern.
  3. Paired image.

Only a top-class master can do this kind of work: usually there are two layers, but one image.

The cameo is kept in the Hermitage of St. Petersburg. But this was not always the case; the cameo has a rich history:

  • It was added to the Hermitage collections in 1814 as a gift from Emperor Alexander I.
  • He received it from Napoleon's wife Josephine when the Russian army conquered Paris.
  • Napoleon stole it from the Vatican when the French entered Italy.
  • Before this, the jewelry had several owners - the Duke of Milan Gonzaga (the cameo has been listed in the register of his jewelry since 1542), the Swedish Queen Christina, the Czech King Rudolf II.

It was named after the first owner of the cameo known to Europeans.

STRUCTURE

Crystal structure of sardonyx

The crystal structure of sardonyx, as well as other polymorphic modifications of quartz, is characterized by the peculiarity that the Si4+ ion is always in a quadruple environment of O2- ions located at the vertices of the tetrahedron. Each vertex of such a tetrahedron simultaneously serves as the vertex of another adjacent tetrahedron. Thus, the crystal lattices of these minerals consist, as it were, of frameworks of tetrahedrons linked to each other. The method of coupling in all modifications is the same (through the vertices of tetrahedrons), but the orientation and general symmetry in their arrangement are different. In general, the packing of oxygen ions is not dense: the frameworks have “voids” between the tetrahedra. In low-temperature modifications they are small in size, and in high-temperature, more “loosely” constructed modifications they are larger.

How to distinguish sardonyx from a fake

Sardonyx stone
Counterfeiting of sardonyx began around the same time it became fashionable. That is, in ancient times. Perhaps this is the first stone that began to be imitated on such an industrial scale. The ancient historian Pliny already has references to skilled falsifiers. He wrote that even the author of the original jewelry could not distinguish it from the product of a skilled swindler.

Nowadays, technology has advanced even further; artificial laboratory crystals have appeared. In appearance, they are almost impossible to distinguish from natural ones. Therefore, in order not to fall for the scammer’s bait, you need to carefully consider the certificate.

Natural sardonyx will have a certificate of extraction, while synthetic sardonyx will have a certificate of industrial product. Also, in the passport, the name of the stone may be written in quotation marks - this is a reason to suspect fraud. Finally, you can simply press the crystal to the skin. Glass or plastic will heat up from the heat of the human body, the mineral will remain cold longer.

Sometimes they try to pass off a gem as more expensive crystals, such as carnelian. The main difference between carnelian and sardonyx is the color of the layers. The first one is red and white, the second one is brown and white.

Description

The mineral sardonyx belongs to the chalcedony family. Mineralogists classify it as a red-brown banded variety of agate with its own name - sardonyx.

Traditionally, the mineral is divided into two types - male and female:

  • The male stone is distinguished by a dark (brown, brownish, burgundy) background. This gives the mineral restraint and solemnity.
  • The color palette of ladies' sardonyx looks more delicate, softer, and lighter. The multilayer structure is dominated by warm colors of tea rose, sandy-orange, amber-yellow shades.

Both varieties of sardonyx contain the same shades, but the type determines the prevalence of dark or light layers.

Women's stones are “warmer”, silkier, softer. In men's hair, the layering is more pronounced, and the overall background is darker.

Medicinal properties

Products made from sardonyx flower
Since ancient times, sardonyx was considered a remedy that promotes the regeneration of the human body after damage. This nugget was used for the rapid fusion of cartilage and bones due to fractures, restoration of ligaments after sprains, to stop bleeding and heal wounds.

Our ancestors have always divided sardonyx into female and male gems. Stones of light shades were considered feminine, and dark nuggets were considered masculine. At the same time, the owners and owners of the talismans felt the power of the stone in different directions - the amulet helped women get pregnant, and men - to recover from ulcers and various skin lesions.

Records of sardonyx are contained in the medicine books of ancient Rus'. In those days, the mineral was used as an analgesic and anti-inflammatory agent. Also, Russian healers used the gem to cure “fragility of the body” or, in modern terms, osteochondrosis (arthrosis).

For this purpose, pink or light orange beads were applied to the problem area, secured with fox fur. People believed that the stone “came to life” under the influence of animal heat, eliminating severe pain.

Do you know that the ancient sages of Christianity, when describing the deeds and accomplishments of the saints, dedicated the “onyx from Sardis” to Philip, the apostle who brought people back to life and healed the poisoned?

In Rus' it was believed that sardonyx, ground into powder, kills tumors growing in the abdominal cavity. Russian healers used this powder for severe abdominal pain. Modern research in this area has shown that in fact this method takes place in cases of disorders in the intestines, since the effect of the powder from the striped mineral is equal to the effect of sorbents.

Today, lithotherapists have studied the range of problems of the human body that can be eliminated with the help of sardonyx:

  • disorders of the thyroid gland;

Esotericists who study the influence of minerals on various chakras of our body have identified sardonyx to the solar plexus chakra. Therefore, the action of this mineral is aimed at overall improvement of physical and mental well-being. If the solar plexus chakra works harmoniously, then the liver, spleen and other digestive organs, along with the thyroid gland, work like clockwork, and the person feels a surge of strength and energy.

  1. The stone is very fragile and vulnerable to mechanical damage. Therefore, it must be carefully protected from impacts, shocks and falls.
  2. It is best to store sardonyx in a separate soft cloth bag so that other minerals do not squeeze it.
  3. The stone is afraid of bright sunlight. Therefore, you need to keep it in a secluded dark place.
  4. Products containing sardonyx should be cleaned at least once a year. Only the most gentle means are suitable for this - warm soapy water, a soft brush. Active detergents are contraindicated; they can irreversibly damage the stone.

When a gem gets wet, it may lose its shine, but will regain it once it dries.

Price and care

The cost of sardonyx depends on the number of grams: the average price for 1 gram of processed gemstone on the world market varies from $9 to $12.

Sardonyx is a rather soft stone, which is why jewelry made from it needs to be stored in a special bag.

You need to wear jewelry with gemstones with extreme caution: they should not have any physical impact. Even minor impacts and falls can cause defects to appear on the stone, which will ruin the appearance of the product.

You should not walk in the open rays of the sun wearing jewelry, especially near the sea - there is a high probability that the stone will change its color and look unpresentable.

Important: Laundry, cleaning and dishwashing detergents can spoil the appearance of jewelry containing sardonyx. Therefore, women should definitely remove their bracelets and rings before starting housework.

MORPHOLOGY

Polished Brazilian sardonyx balls, 18 mm

Sardonyxes (siliceous geodes) have a concentric-zonal structure, caused by the intermittency of differently colored layers of chalcedony and sometimes quartz. The central parts of geodes are often composed of crystalline-grained quartz, sometimes in the form of brushes of crystals.

Sardonyx, on the one hand, differs from chalcedony - monomineral non-zonal accumulations of this mineral, including its colored varieties, and on the other hand, from hydrothermal jaspers, sometimes found in close association with agates, genetically related to basic and intermediate volcanics, which are dense chalcedony formations containing quartz, quartz and various mechanical impurities - goethite, hematite, celadonite, chlorite and others, the content of which reaches 20-30%, and are opaque even in thin fragments. Such jaspers can form separate parts of agate geodes or form interlayers in them.
