Any gold jewelry begins to fade over time, loses its original attractiveness and does not look as impressive as before. This happens because impurities of other metals are introduced into the composition of jewelry gold to impart strength, which over time begin to oxidize and change color.
What to do if gold jewelry begins to resemble ordinary jewelry? To prevent this from happening, we will tell you how to clean gold at home so that it always looks as luxurious as when you bought it.
Types and causes of gold contamination
Gold itself is not used in jewelry: firstly, its extraction and purification is an expensive business, which increases the cost of the item several times. Secondly, the metal is very soft, and only by adding different alloys can jewelers achieve greater strength of the product. Along with its strength, the precious metal acquires a tendency to oxidize. When the thin layer of protective coating is damaged, the metals react with everything that comes in their way. The main reasons for contamination of jewelry:
- contact with skin, as well as ingress of water, causes oxidation of white gold;
- interaction with perfumes, creams, hygiene products, decorative cosmetics and household
- chemistry;
- skin secretions (sweat, etc.);
- dust and city dirt.
What can't you clean?
Do not use a toothbrush when brushing. Even the fabric with which you will wipe the product must be soft; you cannot use a hard one. Abrasive cleaning powder is also prohibited, i.e. a product that contains fine-grained substances - quartz sand, chalk, etc.
Do not use products containing ammonia. If this substance remains on the surface of the product for a long time, it will ruin its thin coating. You should not use vinegar or other acidic cleaning products.
It is sometimes recommended to clean gold with toothpaste. But it should not be used when cleaning white gold, as it may contain chemicals that will damage the rhodium plating.
Cleaning methods
The nature of the contamination determines how best to clean your jewelry at home. I tried most of the folk methods on my jewelry. Read on to learn what items cleaned at home look like.
Soap solution
This white gold ring, which I never take off, magically transforms every time I go for a manicure. This got me thinking about the magical properties of ordinary soap - why not use it to clean at home?
The method is as simple as a felt boot: pour warm water into a small container (I used a ceramic bowl) and drop a little liquid soap or shower gel. Soak your favorite earrings in it for several minutes, then gently wipe and rinse with a piece of the soft side of a dishwashing sponge. Voila - the decoration is cleaned!
Baking soda
Experts do not recommend getting carried away with powdered products when you need to clean precious metals. But this is not the first year that soda has been my faithful assistant. With its help, I restore the shine of easily scratched surfaces at home. The experiment involved: a white gold bracelet with engraving, where dirt tries to get into, distilled water, cotton swabs and soda itself.
I took a tablespoon of soda and, literally wetting it drop by drop, prepared a thick paste. The paste was applied to white gold using chopsticks. She rubbed it not very hard, with gentle movements. The remaining paste was washed off with warm water.
The method has proven: if you are not fanatical, you can safely clean your favorite item at home.
By the way, I recently learned about another way to clean white gold at home, although I haven’t had time to try it yet. According to the recommendation, you need to boil 20 g of soda in filtered water, pour it into a container covered with foil, put the decoration in there for several hours, rinse and dry. This method of cleaning gold is good as a preventive measure.
Ammonia or ammonia
Liquid ammonia is a powerful solvent that easily removes plaque. Leave the product in the liquid for half an hour, then rinse it off and wipe the cleaned item with a cloth. But I took the ring out after 15 minutes, and this was enough to restore its original shine at home.
There are several other methods for cleaning products at home:
- You will need hydrogen peroxide, or rather, the most concentrated solution of it; it must be mixed with ammonia in equal parts. Dilute with water, immerse jewelry (only those without stones) in the solution and boil for no more than 10 minutes. After 5 minutes, transfer them to a container with lukewarm clean water, rinse well, and wipe with microfiber.
- Take some baby shampoo and 30 ml of 10% ammonia, dilute in 100 ml of water. The products are placed in the solution for 2 hours. From time to time, the contents need to be stirred so that the dirt begins to come off, and thus clean the jewelry. Then rinse them, wiping them with a sponge, and polish them with a soft cloth.
- Place white gold in a soft fabric bag in a plastic container and fill it with 150 ml of hot water. Add an ampoule of ammonia, 7 teaspoons of 30% hydrogen peroxide and a couple of pinches of washing powder. Close the container with a lid and shake vigorously for about 5 minutes. Remove the cleaned contents, rinse and dry with fleece.
- Cleaning composition of glycerin, magnesia solution and ammonia. The components are mixed in equal quantities. To clean jewelry, moisten a cotton swab with the resulting mixture and thoroughly wipe the contaminated areas. All that remains is to wash off the composition and polish the surface with a flannel cloth.
Nail polish remover
It is important to choose a liquid for weakened nails, because it contains a minimum of aggressive components: the product must be cleaned, not damaged. Also note that the product should not contain acetone.
The method is suitable for cases when you need to clean white gold from grease and stubborn dirt at home.
Soak a cotton swab in nail polish remover and gently wipe the surface. Then rinse the product in lukewarm water.
Sugar
Dissolve three teaspoons of sugar in 0.5 liters of warm water, leave the accessory overnight. I tested this method on white gold hoop earrings with a pattern. I can say that the syrup’s dirt, which was deeply embedded in the patterns, was not afraid, but in general the earrings regained their shine, so this method is suitable for cleaning light deposits at home.
Detergent
I found this recipe on the Internet. Place a cotton cloth on the bottom of an enamel saucepan, white gold on it, pour 200 ml of water and a couple of drops of dishwashing detergent on top. All this boils for about 15 minutes. When cool, remove the contents of the container and clean with a fleece cloth.
And jewelers say that when cleaning white gold at home, it is enough to put the accessories in a glass of water for 20 minutes, although in this case you will need more detergent - 10-15 drops.
Toothpaste
As with nail polish remover, when cleaning white gold jewelry at home, it's best to use a toothpaste made for sensitive teeth. Rub the paste over the surface with a cotton swab, thus cleaning the product, rinse and thoroughly polish with a flannel cloth.
Which way is better
Based on the experiments conducted, I can say that the most effective of the listed methods for cleaning white gold jewelry at home turned out to be the method with ammonia in a container and nail polish remover.
It is important to consider the nature of the contamination. In simple situations, for example, when dirt has stuck to it over time, a soap solution is enough to clean a ring or bracelet. The undeniable advantage of this method is safety and the ability to clean quickly and at home.
Another 100% method - more expensive, but the most reliable - is special means for cleaning white gold. They are offered in jewelry stores.
More aggressive agents can be used when metal oxidizes. True, they are not suitable for products inlaid with stones. To be more precise, soda, ammonia, toothpaste and nail polish remover will damage the sparkling inserts, so it will not be possible to clean them this way.
Remember that white gold with stones fixed with metal fasteners cannot be boiled.
And if the diamond is held on an adhesive basis, it is generally undesirable for such products to come into contact with water.
How to clean gold jewelry with stones
Cleaning gold jewelry with stones deserves special attention. After all, many precious stones, for example, amber, turquoise, opal, do not tolerate humidity well. Conventional methods for cleaning gold jewelry are not suitable here. Then the question naturally arises, how to clean gold with stones?
An ear stick is ideal for cleaning dirt from stones. Dip it in cologne and begin cleaning the stones with smooth movements. Do not clean jewelry frames with sharp objects; you can easily damage them.
If gemstones are glued to the product, do not immerse them in water. To clean gold from grease stains, you can use a soft cloth previously soaked in an alcohol solution. After cleaning, wipe the jewelry with a clean damp cloth and dry it.
Very strong stains on gold jewelry can be removed with a soft toothbrush dipped in gasoline. It is not recommended to use scouring powders as you may damage the surface of the product.
Rules for cleaning white gold at home
Whatever cleaning method you choose, the end is always the same: be sure to rinse the product with lukewarm water and wipe dry with a soft cloth.
Pay attention to the color: if white gold turns yellowish, it is better to do without experimenting at home and go to the jewelers.
A changing shade indicates damage to the top layer: it will not be possible for a non-professional to restore it; on the contrary, you can completely ruin an expensive item.
How to clean gemstone jewelry
Any alcohol-containing liquid in which you need to moisten a piece of cotton wool will cope with this task. After rubbing the jewelry with a cotton pad, you need to rinse it and walk over it with dry microfiber.
Another proven remedy is a soft cloth, which must first be rinsed with gasoline. Then the product is washed with plain water and wiped until completely dry.
With diamond
For jewelry encrusted with diamonds, a soap solution based on any gel-like product is suitable. Leave the product in the foam for several hours, and then, after rinsing it, polish it with a soft cloth.
Soap
You will need a few drops of liquid soap or shower gel. The selected product must be diluted in a container that has previously been filled with warm water. Products are immersed in the resulting solution and left for 5 minutes. Next, they are taken out one by one, after which they are cleaned with a dish sponge. The latter should be soft, and for the convenience of the cleansing process, you can cut off a small piece of sponge and use it. After cleaning white gold, you need to hold it under running water to remove any remaining dirt. Leave to dry on a napkin.
How to Restore Tarnished or Scratched White Gold
Here's where you definitely don't need any independence: entrust yellowed or scratched white gold jewelry to a jeweler. Cleaning and polishing such a product is a delicate process. Without special equipment, you can completely ruin the top layer of the product; you won’t be able to save it at home.
To minimize damage, be sure to remove jewelry (especially rings and bracelets) while doing household chores, working out at the gym, or other activities that expose your jewelry to hard surfaces or corrosive environments.
Why can polishing be harmful to your rings and other jewelry?
The biggest problem with polishing is that it primarily works by abrading the surface of the jewelry.
It is true that the amount of metal removed in the process is negligible and one polishing session cannot cause significant damage to it. However, after your jewelry has been polished repeatedly, the effect accumulates and the structure of your jewelry becomes weaker.
When it comes to rings, the most affected area when polishing is the frame, as it consists of small parts that are often very thin.
For example, if you have a serrated stone setting, the teeth themselves become thinner and shorter after each polishing of the ring.
This will also happen to other parts of the frame, and over time the frame will become increasingly weaker.
Once the frame of your ring loosens, the gemstones it holds will become loose. After some time, there is a high risk that they will fall out of the frame.
Jewelry should be polished no more than a few times a year. If you do this more often, you will soon begin to notice the negative effects of polishing.
Recommendations for wearing, caring for and storing gold jewelry
White gold in your jewelry box should be stored separately from other metals, as it changes color when in contact with them.
Chlorine and acids are another factor that negatively affects this metal. Therefore, it is better not to wear it to the pool and take it off before you are going to take a shower/bath or wash the dishes.
But remember that no matter how well you care for your white gold, the rhodium plating will wear out and darken over time, so cleaning it at home is not enough. From time to time it is still better to take them for professional treatment.
Alloy features
White jewelry material is almost no different from the regular version. There is a slight difference in composition, since during creation they use components that form this color on the decoration. Silver is often added to ordinary gold, and palladium, nickel, and platinum are added to this option.
This product is also rhodium plated, which requires special care when wearing. If darkening begins to appear on the ring, you need to show it to a professional. In this case, another layer is applied.
How to properly store diamonds
Diamonds should be protected from direct sunlight, as well as bleaches, powders and other harsh chemicals. It is recommended to store diamond jewelry in closed boxes lined on the inside with soft material, such as velor or velvet. Velvet bags will also work.
It is best to store jewelry separately from each other. So, different diamond rings should not touch each other. You should not leave diamond jewelry for a long time in rooms with high humidity.
Do not store diamond jewelry near heating appliances. It is also undesirable for stones to lie next to pearls. You can put a bag of silica gel in your jewelry box to absorb excess moisture.
Preparing Jewelry for Cleaning
Folk remedies
Do not forget about preventive measures, which include daily wiping the products with a napkin to remove dirt that has accumulated on them during the day. This will help the jewelry maintain its shine and pristine beauty for a long time.
It is not necessary to use special napkins. Those used to clean monitors and LCD screens are suitable for this. They do not harm stones and dissolve dirt.
To prevent white gold from losing its attractiveness, store it in a special box
Proper storage of gold and diamonds plays an important role:
- You should not leave items made of precious metals in the bathroom - high humidity is harmful to them;
- Gold items should be stored in a dry, dark place, protected from the sun;
- It is better to separate products with pearls from other jewelry;
- It is best to store gold in a closed box or container to protect it from dust.
If you follow these rules, you will have to clean your jewelry much less often.
It is also very important to remember what not to do:
- clean with products containing abrasive components;
- use methods that have not been tested, because exposure to chemicals can damage the insert;
- dry diamonds with a hairdryer or wash in hot water;
- rub with soda, dip in vinegar, potassium permanganate, hydrogen peroxide - the gold will fade and oxidize, and the diamonds will become cloudy;
- do not allow contact with bleach - it promotes discoloration of gold.
Do not forget that only systematic care can guarantee the beautiful appearance of white gold jewelry with diamonds. If the diamonds have ceased to shine, and the former shimmer cannot be restored, you need to contact a jeweler to have them re-cut.
If you decide to clean your jewelry yourself, you need to take into account the characteristics of the metal. Despite the protective coating, it is very soft and has low resistance to mechanical damage. For this reason, incorrect handling can lead to scratches and abrasions on the surface of the product.
How to clean white gold without damaging your jewelry? Follow these rules:
- Inspect the product for scratches and damage. If they exist, it is better not to take risks and entrust this work to a professional.
- When using toothpaste to clean, use only soft-bristled brushes. If you took a toothbrush, then it should be quite old and “worn”.
- When the product is decorated with stones, alcohol-containing substances cannot be used (including ammonia). These compounds can only be used if you are dealing with diamonds.
- When rinsing your gold after cleaning, be sure to thoroughly rinse off the substance you used.
- After rinsing under running water, do not leave the jewelry to dry naturally, but polish it with a soft cloth.
If white gold has turned black or a yellowish coating has appeared on it, you should not try to clean it yourself, it is better to contact a specialist.
Not every product can be used when cleaning white gold, and some approved products should be used with precautions.
- If you use ammonia, you must remember that this substance is very aggressive and cannot be left on the surface for a long time. After cleaning with this product, rinse the product thoroughly under running water to completely remove the cleaning composition.
- You can use toothpaste to clean white gold, but it is not recommended to do it too often. Use this composition only in the presence of severe or old contamination.
- One of the substances that should not be used when processing white gold items is vinegar. Despite its excellent cleaning properties and relative safety for human health, this substance can harm the capricious metal.
- It is also not recommended to boil products made from this alloy, especially if they are decorated with precious or semi-precious stones.
First you need to understand the nature of pollution:
- the ring or earrings are covered with sticky residue or dirt - you can clean it yourself using the methods given below;
- The jewelry has turned yellow - this is a clear sign of destruction of the rhodium layer. To return the product to its original appearance, a galvanic method is used, which can only be done in laboratory conditions. Therefore, take such jewelry to a specialist; you should not clean them, as you risk further ruining the appearance;
- the products have turned black - this is the effect of acids or their vapors. Polishing will help here, but it must be done very carefully. Therefore, if you are unsure of your own abilities, then it is better to leave the jewelry in the hands of a specialist.
When choosing a cleaning method, remember not to use highly abrasive or caustic products.
Cleaning agent | Impact on the surface |
Soap | Soft |
Baking soda | Soft |
Detergent | Soft |
Toothpaste | Average |
Ammonia | Strong |
Despite the mild effect, the first three products should be used with the utmost care, trying to clean white gold jewelry with as gentle movements as possible.
Soap solution
Dilute a small amount of liquid soap or shower gel in a bath of warm water. Dip the jewelry into this solution. From a soft dish sponge, cut a piece of such a size that it is convenient for you to clean. Gently wipe the product thoroughly and rinse it in clean water.

To prepare it you need to use distilled water. Pour baking soda into a bowl and add water little by little, stirring thoroughly until the mixture forms a thick paste.
Apply the resulting mixture to a toothbrush (necessarily with soft bristles) and rub the jewelry with it. Remember to use this product only on the surface of white gold, without touching inserts of stones or other metals.
Rub with gentle movements until visible dirt comes off the gold, but not for too long, otherwise you will ruin the rhodium plating. Rinse off any remaining paste from the jewelry in warm water (distillate).
There is another method based on soda:
- 2 tsp. dissolve baking soda in a glass of filtered water;
- boil the solution;
- lower the decoration into it for 15 minutes.
Detergent
Any gel-like dishwashing or laundry detergent will do. How to clean: just add a few drops of gel to distilled heated water and whip up a thick foam. Dip the product into it and gently wipe with a soft toothbrush. Rinse in clean water.
Toothpaste
If you are going to use this product, then remember that the toothpaste must be gel-like and not contain any abrasive inclusions.
To clean, simply apply a little product to the soft bristles of a toothbrush, rub the product with it, and then rinse it in warm distilled water.
Ammonia
There are 2 ways to clean white gold products with this product. The first is to impregnate a soft cloth with alcohol, which is used to carefully wipe the jewelry. After this, it must be rinsed very thoroughly.
If the decoration is very dirty, then use the second method:
- Pour 2 tbsp into a shallow bowl. l. distilled (can be filtered) water;
- pour 6 to 8 drops of ammonia into it and stir thoroughly;
- leave the decoration in the solution for 30 or 40 minutes;
- after that, take it out and wipe the contaminated areas with a piece of cotton wool or a cotton swab;
- Rinse the product thoroughly in clean water.
For a better effect, crushed chalk can be added to this solution.
Summary: popular cleaning products include products that actively break down dirt and soften water. Unfortunately, not all of them are suitable for cleaning products with stones. Don't forget to polish your jewelry with microfiber at the end.
Of course, seriously soiled jewelry should be taken to specialists for cleaning, who will carefully return it to its original appearance. Most often, they use ultrasonic baths to get rid of ordinary organic contaminants. This device can also be purchased for home use. Small baths are quite a budget option and are becoming increasingly popular. Their downside is that they may not be able to cope with quite serious stains, but they are guaranteed to get rid of small and medium-sized ones.
To clean white gold, you can use boiling. To do this, place the products in a soft linen bag and keep in boiling water for several minutes. But this method can only be applied to those jewelry that do not contain decorative inserts or admixtures of other metals.
It is recommended to use isopropyl alcohol to clean jewelry with stones.
If your jewelry is heavily scratched, take it to a jeweler for grinding and polishing - it is quite difficult to do this safely and effectively at home.
Now let’s look at the tools that you can often find advice on using, but it is undesirable to use them:
- vinegar - yes, this is a good cleaning agent, but not for white gold, as can be understood from the description of its properties. Acetic acid is quite aggressive for the coating of such products and can seriously damage it;
- lime - sometimes you can find advice to leave your decoration in a paste of lime and water for as long as 2 hours. Lime is an aggressive and rather caustic substance, which will cause even more harm to the product during this time;
- onion juice - this also happens. It is usually advised to rub a piece of onion on the darkened areas. This juice contains a weak concentration of sulfuric acid and it is not a fact that it will not leave a mark on the coating.
These products will, of course, clean your jewelry, but they will most likely ruin them at the same time.
- 1Make a soap solution from dishwashing detergent or washing powder. Any product you have at home will do, as long as it does not contain chlorine. Dip the white gold product into a bowl with the solution and boil for 10 minutes.
- 2If you don’t have any detergents on hand or you don’t trust chemicals, use soda. However, you need to take into account that at high temperatures the soda solution produces foam, so it is advisable to monitor the boiling process so that the contents of the container do not run out. Proportions of soda and water – 1 tbsp. l. per 100 g. To complete the cleaning, wipe the gold with a flannel cloth.
- 3You can also clean precious metal with toothpaste. It is recommended to give preference to a paste for sensitive teeth so as not to damage the coating of the product. Rinse off the toothpaste with warm water.
- 4Ammonia in combination with hydrogen peroxide also gives good results. To do this, mix 1 ampoule of ammonia and 50 ml of peroxide. Dip the gold into the resulting solution and leave for 7-8 hours (or overnight).
How to care for jewelry and prevent rapid contamination
Precious stones require special attention. There are stones that do not tolerate moisture: amber, turquoise, opal, etc. Therefore, when planning to clean your jewelry yourself, you should make inquiries about the characteristics of the stones in your jewelry. Moreover, the usual home cleaning methods described above do not apply here.
Dirt and plaque not only settle on the metal itself, but also get stuck between the stones, making them even more difficult to remove. The ideal tool would be a cotton swab. It will not damage the setting of the stones in any way, which cannot be said about sharp, hard objects.
Do not put the decoration in water if the stones are attached. Otherwise they will simply disappear.
Powders or pastes should not be used to clean stones, as such products can severely damage the surface. Serious stains can be easily removed with gasoline.
If the hardness level of the stones is below 5, then only a soap solution can be used as a remedy. Low hardness stones include opal, malachite, moonstone, turquoise, and apatite.
Speaking about pearls, it is worth noting that this stone is of organic origin, which means it is very fragile and, naturally, cannot be exposed to aggressive chemicals. However, using table vinegar is no less dangerous, even though it is natural and is used as food, as it can dissolve the pearl and the stone will simply disappear.
Jewelry is something that we acquire for a long time, and in many families it is hereditary. What needs to be done to preserve products in their original form for many decades? Follow the basic rules for caring for precious metal:
- When storing, place products made from this alloy separately from other jewelry, otherwise it may lead to color change;
- Always remove jewelry before swimming in the bath or visiting the pool, since chlorine contained in tap water can destroy the protective coating of rhodium;
- when applying cosmetic creams or medical compositions for external use, get rid of rings, bracelets and chains;
- When performing cleaning, repairs and other household chores, put jewelry in boxes, since fumes from chemicals and dyes harm the metal;
- do not store products in cardboard boxes, this material contains sulfur, and it leads to the oxidation of metals.
But even the most careful care does not relieve you of the need to clean your jewelry. If you do everything correctly, you will restore white gold quickly and without the risk of damaging the metal.
Method 5: special means
Professional jewelry cleaning products have a safe composition and high-tech formula. Thanks to particles of different dispersion, they remove dust, dirt, and grease well. As a result of the use of industrial compounds, the metals from which jewelry is made acquire a bright shine. Some compositions are capable of filling microcracks and returning natural radiance to precious stones.
Cleaning products in the form of solutions, pastes, foams, and sprays can be purchased at jewelry stores. There are also specialized cleansing shampoos, but they are more intended for use in professional cleaning installations, for example, ultrasonic washers or chambers.
How to avoid scratches?
You should get used to the fact that your jewelry will always have a few scratches, especially if it is made of a softer metal such as gold or silver.
It goes without saying that you need to protect your gold jewelry from shocks and collisions to avoid scratches.
If you want your ring to last longer, choose a piece made from a more durable metal such as platinum.
Platinum also scratches, but much more slowly than gold, and even when it does, it does not lose as much material, so polishing scratches in platinum jewelry is not as harmful to it.
Method 7: Coca-Cola
The carbonated soft drink is renowned for its anti-corrosion and cleaning properties. This soda is often used to remove rust and limescale. How it works? It's all about phosphoric and citric acids included in the product.
The active substances in the drink are good at removing dirt from jewelry. Pour 0.5 liters of cola into a deep container and place a diamond ring there. After 30–40 minutes, remove the jewelry, rinse with cool water and wipe with a dry cloth.
It is important to understand that you should use soda carefully. Not all diamond jewelry can withstand such an original cleaning.
Some tips
Cleaning white gold, oddly enough, is easy. It is enough to follow a few simple rules.
This material is very sensitive to chlorine, so remove jewelry made from it before washing dishes (if the water is chlorinated in your area) or going to the pool. And also limit contact of products with other acids.
Rhodium plating is very sensitive to friction, so try not to make sudden movements when wearing such jewelry, as well as when removing them.
Never leave such products wet for a long time; wipe them thoroughly dry.
Now you know how to clean dirty jewelry yourself. This is easiest to do with solid alloy products. It is also easy to clean white gold with diamonds at home, but with other stones and inserts you should be extremely careful.
Cleaning and polishing gold jewelry at home is not that difficult. The main thing is to know how not to make things worse.
Cleaning and polishing gold jewelry at home is not that difficult
To ensure you get the desired result, consider the following:
- When cleaning precious metal, do not use abrasive, aggressive products to remove dirt: powders and gels, cloth with hard pile.
- Choose a brush for cleaning stones with soft natural bristles - it will effectively clean the surface of the gold without scratching it.
- For purification, take purified water (at most distilled, at least passed through filters).
- Before cleaning, check your jewelry for the integrity of the latch, other link connection, and stone attachment. This is an essential precaution, as the product may break during the cleaning process.
- After cleaning, rinse the jewelry thoroughly in cool water, always running, and then dry it, polishing with a soft cloth.
What is strictly prohibited from cleaning jewelry:
- Baking soda - in pure, powdered form, it will cause scratches and remove shine.
- Iodine - under its influence, gold can change its color.
- Bleach and chlorine-containing solutions, powdered cleaning agents - they can discolor gold.
- Potassium permanganate - this will lead to the metal simply oxidizing.
Before cleaning, check for any damage to the product. If there are any, then it is better to take the jewelry to a workshop. If you try to clean it yourself, you may cause even more damage to the precious metal. And on white gold, even the slightest scratches are very noticeable.
If you rinse your gold ring or chain with running water after cleaning, be careful as small jewelry can easily be dropped down the drain. You can plug the drain with a plug first to be more sure.
If you are a keen swimmer, be sure to remove your white gold jewelry before swimming. Pool water contains a lot of chlorine, which can destroy the rhodium coating over time.
If the product is decorated with stones, you should remember that alcohol, including ammonia, can only be used with diamonds (it does not matter with one diamond or several).
To clean gold with toothpaste, it is wiser to use an old toothbrush. This will make it less likely that you will damage the metal coating.
It is recommended to remove gold jewelry before using creams, other cosmetics and medicinal ointments.
This will have a negative effect on the metal, which will be very noticeable on the white surface.
It is not recommended to store white gold jewelry in cardboard boxes. Cardboard contains a substance called sulfur, which tends to oxidize.
