Chain earrings or broach earrings (also known as thread earrings ) are one of the popular varieties of modern women's jewelry. They are a fairly simple design that does not have the usual lock. A thin chain is threaded through the hole in the earlobe, drawing the decorative part of the jewelry close to it. These earrings are held in place by their own weight. Stretching through the earlobe, the chain hangs freely from behind it. Therefore, chains are also called broach earrings.
Variety of types and types of earrings
Earring models can be broadly divided into classic and original. There are also earrings:
Tapeworm
Mono or solitaire is a single, unpaired piece of jewelry that is also worn by men. However, many other styles of earrings are not ordered for men these days - studs, plugs, rings and even cuffs of a special, more strict, “cold” design.
Clip-on earrings
Clips are accessories that do not require punctures and are attached to the earlobe using a clip.
Piercing earrings
Piercing earrings , which are inserted into various parts of the body from the eyebrows to the navel and below.
Double sided earrings
The earrings are double-sided - a design of two decorative parts, with the back fragment being larger than the front so that its edges stand out against the background of the lobe.
Types of earrings - cuffs
Cuffs are earrings that are located (and sometimes attached) on different parts of the earlobe and shell, sometimes covering and decorating the entire ear.
Studs
Studs or studs are miniature accessories consisting of a decorative head on a pin and a clip. Studs can also be double-sided.
Jackets
Jackets are studs with a pendant that is put on a clip at the back.
Transformable earrings are a trendy type of jacket, consisting of removable parts on both the front and back.
Clusters
Clusters are stud earrings, complicated by the decor of several stones, embossing or curls.
Earrings
Broach earrings are nothing more than chains with an original type of fastening (threading) and a small figure at the end: a round stone or a scattering of crystals.
Congo
Congo - laconic or complicated decorative hoop earrings, can also be multi-tiered.
Chandeliers
Chandeliers (chandelier earrings) are a voluminous, colorfully designed evening modification of earrings.
Girandole earrings - their outline resembles a candelabra with candles. For the most part, these earrings are encrusted with diamonds or other precious stones.
Drop earrings
Drop earrings are jewelry with a pronounced elongated shape, sometimes shoulder length.
Types of earrings - Climbers
Climbers (crawlers) are another fashionable novelty, a “stud” in the form of a stalk, rising up the lobe.
Tunnels
Tunnels are jewelry that is inserted directly into an extended puncture.
Fake plugs are earrings stylized as tunnels and do not require a wide hole.
Earrings, finally, can be precious, real jewelry made of elite metal with natural stones... And jewelry - affordable and everyday.
Types of jewelry, list with photos
These jewelry differ in material, execution technique, type of fittings, size, design, presence or absence of inserts of stones and minerals...
The materials from which earrings are made are not only gold and silver. In the old days, earrings were often made of wood, copper and tin, bronze, and brass. And today, various jewelry alloys are used for the same purpose. Often materials are combined: different types of gold are combined, gold and platinum, gold and silver.
Naturally, the more noble the metals, the more luxurious and refined the item. Earrings made of gold are considered an evening, classic option, silver items are suitable for any occasion, and jewelry made of alloys perfectly complements an informal casual look.
The technique in which earrings are decorated can be ancient or relatively new, because the jewelry craft is constantly evolving.
Inlay, for example, has been known since ancient times. Essentially, it is a combination of two materials, one of which is “built-in” into the other. Most often, earrings are encrusted with natural stones or artificial crystals.
- Gilding is a coating of metal with a thin layer of gold, which gives earrings a shine, a richer appearance and protects them from corrosion. Granulation (graining) - in its process, many miniature balls are soldered to the surface of the product, which merge into a slightly convex, rough pattern.
- Filigree (filigree) - in this case, a wire is soldered onto the metal, creating the effect of weaving, a kind of lace. In the old days, jewelers often combined filigree with graining.
- Blackening is another traditional way of decorative finishing of silver jewelry. Their parts are engraved and etched, and special alloys are poured into the resulting microcracks.
- The openwork technique consists in drilling a through elegant ornament into the product blank.
- Embossing - during its execution, the jeweler stamps relief notches on the surface of the object.
- Enameling is the application of colored glass enamels to earrings. The method is quite old, having its own subtypes - cloisonne enamel or cloisonne, champlevé, painted enamel (enamel).
- Diamond edge is a special type of engraving in which a thin top layer is removed from the metal, which allows you to obtain a faceted texture and intense shine.
These are just the basic techniques for decorating earrings; in addition to them, there are hundreds of other jewelry techniques - oxidation, anodizing, tinting, confacing, wrapping, setting and plating (blown or hollow gold is produced in a similar way), color laser engraving... Quite often, craftsmen combine several technologies, thus creating not just jewelry, but an example of jewelry art.
Types of earring clasps
The most famous and convenient:
English castle . This fastening is usually used to equip classic-looking earrings. The pin of the clasp is threaded through the lobe and engages with a narrow strip of metal that encloses it from behind. The English clasp is reliable, comfortable and suitable for heavy items with stones.
Italian clip lock . The pin is secured with a large loop covering the lobe. The Italian lock is inconspicuous, but quite fragile.
The French lock is a long, curved loop that is threaded through the lobe and closed at the bottom with a small loop. French lock earrings have an elegant look, but the loop is quite easy to damage if you press too hard.
Stud lock . It consists of a straight pin and a clamp that is adjacent to it on the reverse side. Accessories with such a clasp can be used to decorate not only the earlobe, but also the shell of the ear.
Lock-bracket : a movable bow is threaded through the hole on the earlobe and attached to the earring using a special ball. This is the most popular clasp for folk jewelry - oriental, gypsy, Creole earrings.
A hinge lock is essentially an elongated bracket without fastening. It is easy to insert and remove, and for greater fixation you can buy silicone plugs - unnoticeable but durable.
A pin lock is a bow that continues the shape of the earring, which is threaded first into the lobe and then inserted into the hollow part of the earring. The lock is reliable, but the earrings equipped with it are heavier and stretch the earlobe.
The thread lock consists of a chain with a stick at the end. The clasp is easy to use, but can get tangled in loose hair.
It should be noted that some types of fittings are compatible only with a certain product model - for example, they are typical for congo earrings or cuffs.
The shapes of earrings are so diverse that it makes no sense to list them. There is strict geometry (ring, rhombus, rectangle...), and a combination of various shapes, and the outlines of flowers, drops, stars, insects, berries and fruits, birds and animals...
Long earrings with chains - what are they usually like?
Typically, chain earrings are made of gold or silver. The decorative part usually has simple shapes. It can be in the form of a variety of shapes: a bow, a flower, a blot, a butterfly, and the like. Inserts made of precious and semi-precious stones are also widely used. The thin chain hanging behind the lobe comes in different lengths. Most often it is 4-5 cm, which makes chain earrings quite comfortable.
Earrings with chains and pendants
In addition to broach earrings, a wide variety of pendants in the form of chains for “regular” earrings are also common. Pendants can be free-flowing thin chains or a single chain, or entire tiers of chains. Jewelers decorate such jewelry with rhinestones, stones and various beads. The clasp on the earrings to which the chain pendants are attached can be very different: stud, English, loop, etc.
In particular, the so-called “double chains” are now popular - when the chain is attached to the ear in two places (two piercings), or ear cuffs (for the whole ear, without a piercing), decorated with chains.
Earrings and face: selection rules
This decoration suits the face of any person, regardless of age and occupation. However, different earrings require not only different styles of clothing, time and occasion... They should be in harmony with the shape of the face and go well with the hairstyle.
- In principle, earrings of any style will suit an oval face. However, long elegant chain earrings will draw attention to the neck, large and round ones to the lips, triangular ones to the blush on the cheekbones.
- A round face will be visually elongated by elongated clip-on earrings, drop earrings and dangle earrings (for example, with tassels). In this case, the pendants should end with a noticeable decorative element approximately at the level of the middle of the neck.
- A narrow, elongated face can be balanced with congo earrings, earrings with large round beads or square-shaped designer jewelry.
- A wide, angular face will become softer and more delicate thanks to clear, visible oval earrings.
- A triangular face, tapering towards the chin, will be rounded off with congo or oval earrings, as well as cluster studs.
A small face with fine features risks becoming unattractive if you wear massive, showy earrings that will draw attention to yourself. Large-faced, big-eyed beauties, on the contrary, can safely buy gypsy earrings, multi-tiered chandeliers and complex ear cuffs.
Neat studs and compact earrings with pearls are ideal for smooth hair, short haircuts and formal styles.
Loose hair is well complemented with fancy, intricate earrings. True, it is still better to wear such “bling” on a special occasion, and use studs or medium-sized round earrings without intricate details as a daily attribute.
And one more piece of advice: don’t force earrings to compete with other jewelry, don’t overload your upper part with different accessories - beads, necklaces, brooches on your collar. The best ally for a pair of beautiful, stylish earrings is a ring or bracelet.
Types of jewelry rings. How to choose and wear correctly, jewelry etiquette
How to wear dangling earrings and other chain earrings?
In a sense, these earrings can be called seasonal, because it is in the warm season that they are most appropriate, revealing their own beauty to the fullest and emphasizing the grace of the lines of its owner. In cold weather, jewelry can get lost in furs or get caught on a scarf or collar.
An open neck and shoulders are the perfect setting for chain earrings. Light and mobile at the slightest tilt of the head, they attract attention. Most of all, such earrings suit young ladies and young women with a long neck, short haircut or picked up hair.
For everyday wear, gold chain earrings are quite appropriate for girls and women whose image is not limited to a strict business style. The decorative part in such cases is quite invisible - it can be figures, patterns or small stones that effectively and delicately emphasize femininity.
For formal and evening occasions, brighter options are used. For example, gold chain earrings with pearls, cubic zirconia, diamonds or Swarovski stones. In such jewelry, stone inserts can be quite large. Complemented with rings or bracelets, chain earrings will complete an elegant and stylish look.
