The uniquely beautiful Padparadscha stone: unique properties, the real history of the stone, where it is mined and charming photos

Historical reference

In its pure form, the stone is colorless aluminum oxide. But thanks to certain impurities and various effects of the crystal lattice, the gem acquires a bright and amazingly beautiful color. The mineral will become unique only when it can go through several cycles of irradiation and heating.

Padparadscha was known to our distant ancestors, but no one knows the exact year of its discovery. The name comes from the Sinhala language and literally translates as “morning dawn”. In mineralogy, until the very end of the 19th century, the nugget was stubbornly called ruby.

Another version of the name of the stone leads us to the word “raja” (i.e. prince). Some experts believe that he is endowed with princely dignity.

Place of Birth

Padparadscha sapphire crystal
In Sri Lanka (Ceylon), solar sapphires have been discovered in placer deposits near Ratnapura and Elahera for 2000 years. For a long time these were the only sources of stones. Quite recently, similar gems were discovered in Vietnam, Thailand, Tanzania and Madagascar.

Most often, crystals of 1-2 carats are found, 5 carat specimens are very rare.

Description

The name of sapphire is translated as “sunrise” or “lotus color”. And in fact, the iridescent facets of orange, reddish and pink shades are reminiscent of a scarlet dawn or a crimson sunset. The second part of the word “raja” means “prince,” which indicates respect for the stone in ancient times.

Padparadscha is the most beautiful of all varieties of corundum, worthy of competing with the unique and unusual minerals known to mankind. Depending on their color, sapphires are divided into two groups:

  • gems with tones that gradually change color from pink to orange;
  • crystals with clearly separated transitions, when the line between orange and pink is visible.

Orange sapphire has a high hardness comparable to that of diamond.

Its composition is crystalline aluminum oxide, and its rare color is due to the presence of impurities, lattice flaws and the energy position of the atoms.

Physical characteristics of sapphire:

  • cleavage - absent;
  • luster - glassy, there is a pleochroism effect;
  • fracture - conchoidal;
  • hardness - 9 units. according to the Mohs scale;
  • transparency - translucent, transparent.

Stone mining is carried out in old placers, where corundum deposits were subjected to natural heating and irradiation. The largest deposit is located in Sri Lanka - excellent specimens of purity are mined there. In addition, there are deposits of minerals in Tanzania and Madagascar, but their colors are not as rich as those of Sri Lankan crystals, so African stones are cheaper.

The sale of padparadscha is closed, so the location of the deposits is carefully hidden and protected from tourists and foreign citizens. Large sapphires are rare; usually orange-pink crystals weigh up to 2 carats. Minerals over 5 carats are considered collectible.

Physicochemical characteristics

Padparadscha has a chemical formula of the form: Al2O3. It does not have cleavage and is therefore very fragile. Its melting point reaches 2050 degrees. It can fuse quite slowly with phosphorus salt and borax, resulting in the formation of light glass. It does not fuse with soda at all.

Compatibility with other stones

From the point of view of the elements, pink sapphire is a combination of incompatible things. It is associated with both Air and Water, and is associated with the planet Jupiter.

Among the minerals that the stone is suitable for, one can note the expensive gems of Air and Water, which in other cases are incompatible. This:

  • emerald;
  • topaz;
  • noble opal;
  • alexandrite;
  • amethyst;
  • tourmaline;
  • rose quartz;
  • golden beryl.

Ring with blue topaz and pink sapphire

Sapphire is incompatible with pearls, as well as with Fire gems - ruby, diamond, almandine and pyrope

But the combination with other garnets - uvarovite and demantoid - is quite successful.

In relation to the element of Earth, pink sapphire is neutral and does not interact with it in any way. These include turquoise, jasper, malachite, lapis lazuli, obsidian and morion: the vast majority of stones are opaque.

Synthetic padparadscha sapphire

Padparadscha sapphire, synthesized by hydrothermal method
The high retail price of padparadscha is an incentive for craft creativity. Moreover, colorless artificial corundum is produced in tons.

To produce color, an already cut, unpainted or lightly colored stone is placed in a chromium-containing charge and sent to a furnace to be heated to 1800°C. High temperature diffusion colors the outer layers of sapphire, but not always evenly.

The ion implantation method produces less waste. However, ion accelerators, magnetic selectors and other laboratory equipment are inaccessible to most craftsmen, and therefore annealing is used more often. However, ion implantation changes the structure of sapphire to a depth of only one tenth of a millimeter, and this method cannot be called revolutionary.

An experienced jeweler, using a simple magnifying glass, will notice both traces of annealing (which creates a special kind of fracturing) and signs of ion implantation.

Treatment of lightly colored sapphires with warm tones with gamma radiation gives a greater effect. Unfortunately, the energetic restructuring of the crystal lattice is a short-lived phenomenon. Over time, crystals irradiated to Padparadscha standards fade again.

Fashion trends

Pink sapphires have been popular for a long time; the fashion for stones of this color originated on the island of Sri Lanka, where the mineral was valued and revered. In Europe, corundums of an unusual shade received recognition later, for which thanks should be given to Princess Diana. She loved jewelry with stones, but the princess especially appreciated the ring that her future husband, Prince Charles, gave her on her engagement day.

Pink sapphire

The jewelry became a relic of the queen's family and, several decades later, the son of Diana and Charles gave the same ring to his bride on their engagement day.

The love story of Diana and Charles is far from a fairy tale; they could not live happily ever after, but even after her divorce from Charles, people loved and respected the princess. She was considered a trendsetter in the world of jewelry.

For many years, jewelry inlaid with pink corundums was considered a sign of high status in society. Only privileged people wore them. But after a deposit of these stones was discovered in Madagascar, jewelry became more accessible.

Healing properties

Padparadscha
Padparadscha has an amazing effect on the human body. With it, the immune system is protected from any viruses.

  • If the nugget is worn in a gold frame, it will provide adequate resistance to bronchial asthma.
  • This is an excellent addition to the main treatment: with the help of the stone, the effectiveness of all tablets is increased.
  • It is considered a way of rejuvenation.
  • It has a good effect on the genitourinary system and fights inflammatory processes.

Therapeutic effect

This type of sapphire is valued not only for its combination of different shades, but also for its ability to heal people. In Ancient India, people believed that touching this precious stone allows one to achieve enlightenment and spiritual harmony. Specialists in lithotherapy and traditional medicine claim that the properties of padparadscha are very extensive. The mineral is capable of:

  • strengthen the immune system;
  • cure asthma, bronchitis;
  • slow down aging;
  • improve the functioning of the cardiovascular system;
  • relieve pain and inflammation in joints;
  • cure diseases of the kidneys and urinary system.

A frame made of white or yellow gold enhances the positive effect of the stone; a healing infusion of the mineral is also used for healing: the sapphire is infused in purified water for at least a day and the drink is consumed before bed.

The magical properties of padparadscha

Padparadscha, like many natural stones, has strong energy and mystical properties. Regular wearing of the mineral protects the owner from dark forces, damage and the evil eye, protects against accidents, but the main magical property of the crystal is the ability to attract love.

padparadscha ring

It is believed that single people who own padparadscha will quickly cease to be alone - the gem will help them find their soulmate and maintain love feelings.

Esotericists recommend wearing jewelry with orange sapphire to those who cannot tolerate lies - the mineral will bring the liar to light. The stone will help expand your circle of friends, establish new connections and strengthen existing relationships.

Talismans and amulets

If we talk about the unique properties of padparadscha in relation to people, we can highlight the following points:

  1. The stone has the maximum positive effect on men named Svyatoslav, Vladimir, Maxim and Oleg, as well as on women named Irina and Elena, Tamara and Victoria, Valentina and Olga.
  2. The mineral increases spirituality in people, which is why it is also called the companion of nuns. It is often used for prayers.
  3. People of creative professions will also benefit from padparadscha, as it helps to reveal talent, strengthen memory, improve imagination and give birth to brilliant ideas.
  4. The mineral will be useful for people who are interested in yoga. It accumulates energy from the outside, directs it to the meditator and promotes his purification.
  5. Padparadscha has the ability to smooth out character flaws. For example, doubting people will become more self-confident, adventurers will learn to weigh decisions, hot-tempered people will become calmer. And passive ones are more energetic.

Stone jewelry

Padparadscha Sapphire Ring
Sun sapphire has a high price due to its unusual colors, iridescence and rarity. Real and expensive stones can be found in jewelry collections. Jewelers emphasize the beauty of the mineral with a frame made of gold or platinum. Padparadschas are harmoniously combined with diamonds and pearls, creating delightful ensembles and compositions.

Padparadscha sapphire is cut into emerald, diamond or oval. They are not processed cabochon. Most often, one stone is set into jewelry. The shades and tints of solar sapphire allow jewelers to create real masterpieces.

Among the famous jewelry with a solar sapphire, the Cartier ring stands out, which combines a ten-carat padparadscha with diamonds. One cannot help but admire the beauty of this necklace from the Cartier collection, which combines sapphires with cascading pearls. Caf collection? Society complements the camellia necklace with padparadscha sapphires and diamonds.

Decorations and prices

The price of a gem and products with it is affected by color, size, transparency, absence of cracks, foreign inclusions, and, first of all, its authenticity and the absence of additional processing (except for cutting).

The price per carat of a small crystal (weighing up to 2 carats) ranges from $1,000 to $2,000; for larger stones it reaches up to $50,000.

Padparadscha goes well with white or rose (not yellow) gold and platinum. It is framed with diamonds and pearls. The cut is carried out “emerald-like”, “diamond-like” or given an oval shape, so as not to reduce the size of expensive crystals.

Genuine solar sapphires are used only by large well-known brands, such as Cartier, Chanel, OmiPrive for high jewelery products, that is, of exclusive quality.

How much does padparadscha cost?

Padparadscha sapphire pendant
The main thing about padparadscha is the impeccability of the color scheme. The intensity of color has little effect on the cost of the stone. A carat of padparadscha, which combines the classic three colors (pink, orange and red), is valued at no less than ten thousand dollars. Moreover, such inserts do not weigh more than two carats: red corundums are naturally small.

Pink-orange padparadschas are also very expensive. True, such crystals can be quite large and can weigh (already cut) ten carats or more. The price, accordingly, ranges from a thousand or one and a half thousand dollars per carat of a flawless “baby”, and up to thirty to fifty thousand dollars per carat - if we are talking about a two- or even one-gram stone.

Features and Benefits

Like any other gemstone, sapphire is evaluated by jewelers and gemologists primarily by color, clarity and weight (carat), but the quality of the cut and the origin of the corundum are also taken into account.

We agree that in addition to dry facts, the stone also has mystical characteristics. You can believe in this, you can deny any existence of magical properties, myths and legends, but over the centuries, rings with sapphires and the stone itself, separately from jewelry, have acquired a rich history, not at all connected with measurements, weighings, carats and boring tables.

Magic properties

Just look at the mention of sapphire in the Bible, among all 12 precious stones! Blue corundum had the honor of being present on the tablets of Moses and decorating the throne of the wisest Solomon, thus earning a brilliant, literally and figuratively, reputation - sapphire is called the stone of wisdom and generosity. This is how the belief was born that everyone who wears a sapphire ring will definitely reveal all their talents, live an interesting, but at the same time prudent life, and will always be protected from bad people.

The stone of Zeus, the decoration of heavenly Jerusalem, royal tiaras, royal orbs, sceptres, the pride of the Russian diamond fund, an indispensable attribute in the teachings of Ayurveda - all this is about the same stone: a mysterious, alluring and delightfully beautiful sapphire.

What zodiac signs is it suitable for?

Of course, there are a lot of astrological theories, according to which rings with sapphire are recommended for the fire signs of the zodiac, Leo, Aries and Sagittarius, and are strictly contraindicated for Scorpios, for example. But you must admit, who would resist accepting such a gift, explaining the refusal to decorate with a horoscope recommendation?

Our team is sure: if you bought a sapphire ring for yourself, you really like it and always evoke only positive emotions, horoscope forecasts are powerless. And a piece of jewelry given to a dear person with love and care will definitely outweigh all astrological theories.

How to recognize a fake

Padparadscha
To attract buyers, jewelers often assign a similar term to stones that have nothing to do with sapphires and even rubies. The trade name is also used as a trick, calling a crystal of a similar shade Padparadscha, which is completely incorrect.

Such tricks attract buyers, and many people, who have no idea what color such a sapphire should have, make a rash purchase.

A jeweler will help you find out the truth and recognize padparadscha, but not every craftsman can do this. The difficulty lies in the fact that experts are still arguing about the shade that crystals should have. The palette of shades is not so wide, so it can be difficult to determine the authenticity of the stone.

However, the cost of jewelry will help you recognize a “lotus flower” (that’s what sapphire of a similar shade is called in the East). Jewelry inlaid with padparadscha cannot be cheap, since the crystal is rare in nature and is prized by jewelers. An exception can be considered those minerals that received a tint after processing. But their price is far from affordable.

Diagnostics of the nature of sapphire coloring in the Laboratory of the Main Center of Moscow State University

Naturally colored yellow , orange , reddish-orange, and , and producing similar color varieties artificially through annealing is common and common today. And if higher temperatures are needed to obtain the attractive yellow color of sapphires (annealing 1000-1500°C, Be diffusion - 1800°C), then the pink color of sapphires can be made saturated by removing the blue tint by annealing at only 800-1000C. In such cases of low-temperature annealing, the internal features of the stones do not undergo external changes, and diagnosing such refining using traditional methods is problematic .

Three natural sapphires of orange-red, red-pink and yellow colors (Fig. 1) were studied at the Laboratory of the Main Center of Moscow State University in order to establish the nature of their color . The weight of the stones was 4.96, 4.57 and 10.84 carats, respectively.

Rice. 1. Sapphires of orange-red, red-pink and yellow colors of 4.96, 4.57 and 10.84 carats, examined in the Laboratory of the Moscow State University Center for the presence of color enhancement.

Microscopic examination of internal features showed that yellow sapphire clearly exhibits color and growth zoning, presented in the form of wide parallel stripes lying in different planes and intersecting each other (Duroc-Danner, 2011; see also Fig. 2, b). The stone contained opaque mineral inclusions surrounded by tensor cracks (Fig. 2, a) and “curtains” of gas-liquid inclusions. In two sapphires of orange-red and red-pink colors, numerous, scattered, small-sized transparent mineral inclusions of an elongated, round shape, surrounded by light brown radioactive halos, were observed (Fig. 2, c). Based on their appearance, these mineral inclusions were diagnosed as zircon.

Rice. 2. Microscopic features of the studied sapphires: a – opaque mineral inclusion in yellow sapphire, surrounded by tensor cracks, magnification 45 times; b – growth zonation in yellow sapphire, magnification 25 times; c – transparent, round inclusion of zircon, surrounded by a radioactive halo, magnification 250 times.

The internal, unaltered features of all three sapphires indicate the absence of refinement using Be-diffusion, which can produce similar color varieties. We can confidently say that these stones were not heated to temperatures of 1800 C, since at such temperatures required for Be-diffusion, transparent grains of zircon inclusions lose their transparency, grain boundaries become uneven, and disk-shaped cracks form around them. IR and Raman spectroscopy techniques were used to further test the stones for lower temperature annealing.

The IR spectrum obtained from yellow sapphire in the mid-IR region of 4000-2000 cm-1 contains several OH bands of the so-called 3161 series. The most basic of them is 3161 cm-1, and less intense accompanying bands 3355, 3242, 3075 (shoulder) , 2459, 2420 cm-1 (Fig. 3). These bands are due to OH groups associated with Mg2+ impurities in sapphire. A similar IR spectrum is characteristic of yellow, yellow-orange and padparadscha-colored sapphires from metamorphic deposits with low iron content in the host rocks (for example, Sri Lanka). In the presence of annealing, the listed OH lines would disappear; upon annealing in a reducing environment (hydrogen), an absorption band at 3309 cm-1 would appear in the IR spectrum. Consequently, the IR spectrum of the studied sapphire indicates the absence of annealing and the metamorphic genesis of the stone (Emmett et al., 2003; Smith et al., 2006; Duroc-Danner, 2011).

Rice. 3. IR spectrum of yellow sapphire with an OH series of bands at 3161 cm-1, confirming the absence of annealing and indicating the metamorphic origin of the sample.

The IR spectra of orange-red and red-pink sapphires did not contain any bands of OH groups of corundum itself or OH bands of hydrous minerals , which could be used for diagnostics. Therefore, using a Raman spectrometer with a microscope attachment, spectra were obtained from zircon inclusions in both samples. Numerous studies devoted to studying the behavior of zircon inclusions in sapphires during annealing under different temperature conditions (Wang et al., 2006; Krzemnicki, 2010; Shelementiev et al., 2013) have established that by the nature of the Raman spectrum of zircon or by measuring the half-width (FWHM) of the Raman lines, you can determine whether the sapphire has been annealed. The changes observed in the Raman spectrum of zircons are explained by the fact that natural zircons contain impurities of radioactive elements (Th, U), the decay of which causes the destruction of the zircon crystal lattice (metamictity), leads to an increase in its volume and, as a consequence, the formation of cracks in the minerals surrounding zircon. Violation of the ordering of the zircon structure leads to a decrease in the intensity of the Raman lines and their broadening. When heated during the annealing process, the crystalline structure of metamict zircons is gradually restored (the intensity of the Raman lines increases, their half-width decreases), at temperatures from 1400°C subsolidus decomposition of zircon occurs (at the boundary of inclusions), above 1600°C partial to complete melting is observed (Wang et al., 2006).

Rice. 4. Raman spectra of zircon inclusions in the studied sapphire (light pink) and in sapphires annealed at temperatures of 800 and 1200°C.

Figure 4 (lower spectrum) shows the Raman spectrum of zircon inclusion in one of the studied sapphires, three lines of which 1010, 975, 438 cm-1 correspond to vibrations of SiO4 tetrahedra, lines 223 and 201 cm-1 - vibrational modes of interaction of SiO4 tetrahedra and Zr atoms (Wang et al., 2006). The half-width of the 1010 cm-1 line is 12.3 cm-1 (when excited by a 532 nm laser). For comparison, Figure 4 also shows the spectra of zircon inclusions in sapphires annealed at temperatures of 800 and 1200°C (Shelementiev et al., 2013). It can be noted that the intensity of their Raman lines is much higher; the half-width of the 1010 cm-1 line after annealing at 1200°C is 10.2 cm-1 (when excited by a 532 nm laser). If sapphire is subjected to higher temperature annealing, then the changes in the Raman spectra of zircon inclusions will be even more significant. Thus, careful analysis of the spectra and calculation of the half-width of the main Raman lines (1010, 975, 438 cm-1) makes it possible to diagnose sapphires that have even undergone low-temperature annealing, or to establish its complete absence. Regarding the studied sapphires, based on the analysis of the Raman spectra of zircon inclusions and FWHM calculations, it was established that there was no heat treatment , which means that the origin of the color of the stones is natural .

conclusions

Diagnostics of orange-red, red-pink and yellow sapphires at the Laboratory of the Moscow State University Center showed that their color is of natural origin. Numerous internal inclusions of stones, with their unchanged appearance, indicated the absence of Be-diffusion or high-temperature annealing.

It has been established that microscopic study is not enough to identify low-temperature refining, and in this case spectroscopic methods turned out to be decisive. IR spectroscopy made it possible not only to prove the absence of heat treatment for yellow sapphire, but also to determine its genesis, thereby outlining a range of possible deposits.

Examination of numerous zircon inclusions in orange-red and red-pink sapphires using a Raman spectrometer with a microscope attachment determined that these samples also had not undergone heat treatment. Using the Raman spectroscopy method, it was possible to diagnose even low-temperature annealing of pink sapphires from 800°C.

How to care for stone

Padparadscha is a very fragile stone, although at first glance it doesn’t seem so. Any scratch or blow can seriously harm it. To prevent this from happening, the nugget must be placed in a special individual box, the basis of which is fabric. Never mix it with other stones!

But padparadscha will tolerate moisture and the rays of the sun calmly. If dust has formed on the stone, simply wipe it with a damp cloth. There is no need to use any additional chemical compounds.

Zodiac compatibility

According to the zodiac, this is the optimal stone for Sagittarius, favorably emphasizing the lightness and sincerity of their character. It will suit silent and pathologically honest Pisces.

Who is suitable for Padparadscha according to the zodiac?

A rose gold ring with Padparadscha sapphire
Padparadscha suits almost all zodiac signs, with rare exceptions. But this stone is so rare that becoming its owner is a great success.

  • Aries can safely rely on this gem. He will become a good assistant for them in difficult situations and when making difficult decisions. These people should internally feel its support and try to understand what exactly this stone wants to “say.”
  • He will make Taurus even more purposeful and persistent in achieving their goal. It will give them strength and energy, which will help them resist any pressure from ill-wishers and turn the situation over to their side.
  • It is advisable for Geminis to wear such a talisman to all serious events, be it negotiations with investors, meetings with business people or businessmen. It will help them concentrate, think clearly, and delve into all the details so as not to miss the necessary information.
  • It will help Cancers understand love relationships and decide on a life partner. Just don’t rush and carefully understand your own feelings, and then turn to the stone for help. Moreover, this requires some time; it is recommended to wear the product with this mineral on your hand, and it does not matter which finger.
  • Thanks to Padparadscha, Leos can get rid of depression, bad mood, and indecision. The aura of the stone can have a positive effect on their mental state, calm them down, and direct thoughts and actions in the right direction.
  • Virgos should wear jewelry with this stone all the time. This will help them find themselves in society, decide on their occupation, so that work is not a burden to them, but brings not only pleasure, but also a decent reward.
  • Padrapaja will help Libra climb the career ladder, even if there are many envious people who will do everything possible to prevent this. The stone can positively influence the well-being of people born under this zodiac sign, but for this they must make a lot of independent efforts.
  • Scorpios are able to cope with their problems on their own, but the gem can neutralize the impact of negative energy on such people from their enemies. And it doesn’t matter what shape it’s cut into. He will be your assistant always and everywhere.
  • Sagittarians under the influence of the stone become less impulsive, calm, and harmonious. They begin to get along with everyone around them. Many positive aspects appear in their character.
  • Whoever the mineral is not suitable for is Capricorns. He is able to absorb everything negative that belongs to such people and multiply these negative qualities. Therefore, such a zodiac sign should pay attention to the warnings and under no circumstances carry this mineral with them all the time.
  • Aquarians may not be afraid to become the owner of Padparadscha, but only if they have complete mutual understanding with the stone and there is compatibility. It needs to be checked this way. Before going to bed, place the gem under your pillow for the whole night. The possibility of having this mineral as a talisman will depend on what kind of dream a person has (bad or good), or whether it is better to refrain from such proximity.
  • Pisces should pay special attention to this stone. He is able to make them charming and attractive, emphasize their individuality, raise self-esteem, and make them the soul of any company. Moreover, it does not matter how to wear Padparadscha: in the form of jewelry or as a talisman. The result will be the same.

This is interesting

  • The stone's name "Padparadscha" is translated from Sinhala as "lotus flower", and refers to its characteristic color, which is reminiscent of lotuses.
  • Women of any zodiac sign who carry this sapphire with them will be more attractive to the opposite sex.
  • They say that a padparadscha talisman helps you learn unknown secrets.
  • The largest specimen of padparadscha (weighing 100.18 carats) is in the Museum of Natural History (New York). This stone is yellow in the center and orange around the edge.

Compatibility with Zodiac signs

The best compatibility with Padparadscha sapphire is in fire signs: Leo, Sagittarius and Aries. The stone corrects their impulsiveness, helps them get out of crisis situations, and find mutual understanding with partners.

A bright crystal will give self-confidence to a modest Cancer, and it will pacify the explosive Aquarius. Only stubborn and self-confident Capricorns should refuse such an assistant. If they have the opportunity, it is better to check compatibility: put the sapphire by the bedside. Good dreams near the stone indicate goodwill towards the owner; in case of nightmares, the use of padparadscha must be stopped immediately.

Sapphire or ruby?

Ruby and sapphire are often confused. No wonder:

  • both are varieties of corundum;
  • the chemical composition and structure of the crystal lattice are identical;
  • Both are colored by chrome and titanium.

Traditionally they were called corundums; since the 19th century, red corundums became rubies. Today, debates about the nature of pink corundums have divided experts.

Some consider the stones to be fancy sapphires, while others consider them to be a type of ruby. Transparent pink sapphires are more expensive than rubies.

Cost and selection criteria

Buying a pink sapphire will not be cheap:

  • bracelet – 22,000 rubles;
  • gold ring – 13,000 rubles;
  • silver earrings – 6000 rubles;
  • gold pendant – 4000 rubles.

Buying jewelry is a crucial moment. Tips for choosing a crystal:

  • in terms of purity - the stone should shine, let the rays of the sun pass through it, and not be dull;
  • by weight - the mass of a natural mineral rarely exceeds 5 carats (1 g), a larger gem can be obtained by growing it in the laboratory;
  • by color - the richer it is, the more expensive the crystal;
  • by cutting - high-quality cutting makes the rock shine and sparkle; if this is not the case, then the quality of the stone decreases sharply.

Ennoblement

The rarity and high cost of natural sapphire encourages jewelers to obtain the stone in the laboratory. The raw material is inexpensive, deep purple sapphires. To become pink, they are refined, that is, they undergo heat treatment or irradiation. The longer the procedure, the brighter the result.

Refined and natural specimens look the same; only a specialist using high-tech equipment will find the differences.

  1. They knew how to transform ordinary-looking stones into precious beauty back in Ancient Rome.
  2. Today the residents of Madagascar make a living from this. Local technologies were developed before our era, but are not available to European jewelers. It is only known that the processing of pink minerals is shorter and requires lower temperatures than blue ones. When buying ethnic jewelry or a souvenir with sapphires, you can be sure of the quality and naturalness, but not the original color.

Untreated pink stone is a rarity; to confirm its naturalness, each one is supplied with a special certificate.

The country of extraction speaks about the quality; the best crystals come from Sri Lanka or Kashmir. Processing raises the price of low-grade specimens. High quality pristine sapphires are more expensive than artificially improved ones.

Jewelry with pink sapphire

When processed, the stones are shaped into a ball or oval; crystals larger than 2 carats are cut into cabochons. The main materials for the frame are platinum and gold. Silver is considered a cheap metal for sapphire and is used extremely rarely.

Caring for pink sapphire is simple:

  1. Protect from prolonged exposure to the sun and exposure to high temperatures. Otherwise, the stone will become dull and lose its shine.
  2. Clean 3-4 times a year with a soft brush and baby soap, then rinse well with running water. Dry with a towel or napkin.
  3. Store separately from other jewelry. Due to its high hardness, the gem can damage them.
