The mining of Russian diamonds began not in Yakutia, but in the Urals in the Perm province in 1829. The first 22 Yakut minerals were found on August 7, 1949 on the Sokolinaya spit, 135 kilometers from the city of Mirny. They were found by geologists under the leadership of Grigory Khaimovich Fainshtein, a geologist whose name also went down in the history of world diamond mining.
