Rutile quartz is one of the varieties of quartz that has become popular in the jewelry world due to its original design.
The inclusions inside the crystal resemble hair, which is why it was called “hairy”. The magical properties of the stone turned it into a companion for magicians and witches. This is how the mineral is still used today. It is considered a talisman against evil and also serves as a love talisman.
Physical and chemical properties
In terms of its chemical composition, hairworm, like other types of quartz, is silica (silicon dioxide). The stone is almost always transparent and has inclusions in the form of threads, the color and shape of which are determined by the type. The most valuable specimens have rutile and tourmaline inclusions. The mineral is a dielectric. It does not dissolve in acids (only in hydrofluoric acid), but dissolves in alkalis.

There are, of course, special favorites of the stone: Taurus, Capricorn, Leo.
It is useful for Aquarians to wear amulets and jewelry made from this mineral in order to find themselves and their place in life. But for Aries the stone is neutral, it will just be a decoration. As for creative abilities, they are best revealed in Libra.
The Divine Stone is considered feminine. It is especially useful for unmarried girls. And the stone is ideal for those who bear the names Rose, Lydia, Anna, as well as Timofey and Anatoly.
Shy people use Volosatik in order to communicate normally and become self-confident individuals.
Colors and varieties
Hairy quartz has several main varieties, depending on the type, shape and color of the inclusions, as well as the location of extraction and other factors:
- “Hair of Venus” (or Aphrodite, which is the same thing) is rutile quartz with golden or reddish inclusions.
- “Magomed’s beard” (less commonly “Ali’s beard”) is tourmaline quartz with dark brown or black inclusions (more rarely, hornblende or scherl is present instead of tourmaline).
- “Arrows of Cupid” (or “Arrows of Cupid”) is the same tourmaline quartz, but with perfectly straight needle-shaped inclusions.
- Sagenites are hairy rocks with inclusions similar to movable triangles.
- Kola hairstone is an opaque or cloudy variety mined on the Kola Peninsula with dark green inclusions of aegirine and grayish spots on the surface of the stone.
- Silvery - the shade of the stone and the color of the “hairs” comes from asbestos.
- Yellow or brown-yellow – this is the color of goethite inclusions.
- Green are very interesting patterns obtained thanks to actinolite inclusions, in which everyone can see something of their own.
Each specimen of hairy quartz is unique. There is no second stone of the same type in nature. The price for collectible samples with particularly interesting patterns can reach several thousand dollars.
Story
This jewelry material was extremely popular among the Greeks and Romans. The origin of the stone is always associated with the gods of love. The most common stories are about Venus and Aphrodite, which are almost no different from each other. The mineral is believed to be ice in which the hair of goddesses is encased. Therefore, this type of quartz has long been endowed with strong magical abilities.
However, over time, the popularity of the mineral decreased. For a long period of time, the existence of this stone was practically forgotten. He was even considered cursed and claimed that he develops in a person such qualities as rebellion and lust. But in the 17th century, rutile quartz regained its former fame among the upper class.
The magical properties of the hairy stone
The hairy magic has two main directions - love and foresight:
- Firstly, the stone, considered a gift from the goddess of beauty and love Aphrodite (Venus), fills the life of its owner with love not only in the romantic sense, but also with the warmth of loved ones, friends, children, and so on. It helps to discern true feelings, find your person, refresh existing ones, end protracted ones and start new relationships. It helps to establish mutual understanding among generations, the emergence of new loyal friends and the restoration of family ties.
- Secondly, the hairworm is the link between the human brain and the cosmos. It gives its owner the ability to see the future and options for changing it. Not every person will be able to take full advantage of this gift, since one must have a magical predisposition to become a seer. But absolutely everyone will become more insightful, learn to listen to their sixth sense and avoid dangers.

The priests of Ancient Egypt used rutile quartz to predict immediate and not so events, such as the outcome of military campaigns, the amount of harvest next year, and others. And the inhabitants of Ancient Greece were convinced that the “hairs” in the stone were the threads of human destinies, woven by the spinning goddesses Moira.
Less powerful magical manifestations of quartz are the ability to protect the owner from negative energy, as well as attract positivity, joyful events and friendly people.
Gem magic
In Ancient Greece they believed that the fate of the world and all living things was controlled by the Moira goddesses. Translated from Greek, “moira” means “share” or “fate.” In the minds of the Greeks, the three sisters held the thread of life in their hands. When it was cut, death occurred.
What does rutile quartz have to do with these old bikes? The most direct thing is that the Greeks were sure that the inclusions contained in the crystal were threads of fate.
"Hair of Venus" was used for fortune telling. This magical attribute was not available to ordinary people - only priests were allowed to use it. With the help of the stone, they determined whether the ruler would survive the illness that engulfed him, whether the empire would withstand the onslaught of enemies, and learned many other important things.
During the Renaissance, the talisman passed into the hands of women. Previously it was used for fortune telling. Now it has become a love amulet. Women wore rutile quartz to add attractiveness and attract love.
Opinions on this matter vary widely. Some sources indicate that the hairy creature attracted romance into a person’s life. In others - that it increased sexual energy, made a woman more seductive and desirable, and helped her gain admirers.
During the Renaissance, women wore rutile quartz to enhance their attractiveness and attract love.
Times are changing and now not only the chosen one can use the hairy one, but anyone who has enough money for it.
Magical properties of rutile quartz:
- Develops intuition. A person becomes more receptive to the signs of fate and begins to pay attention to coincidences and advice from above.
- Helps on the creative path - the owner of the talisman is inspired more often than others. His ideas will also seem more interesting to others.
- Rutile quartz promotes contact with the divine. The crystal is used for rituals. During the ritual, the hairy cat protects its owner and helps him tune in to the right wave.
- The hairy creature is capable of stirring up any “swamp”. The mineral lifts you out of depression after a breakup or unsuccessful deals, adds strength, and helps you cope with stress and responsibilities.
- It is still used in love magic. As before, “Cupid's arrows” are used as a love potion. To attract a man, a woman should wear a heart-shaped hairy pendant around her neck. When the relationship has already been established, you can exchange paired jewelry - they will act as a talisman.
Women are advised to wear light-colored hairs, and men are recommended to wear darker specimens, with dark “hairs” or dark spots between them. What such advice is related to and how much benefit it provides is unknown. You can try it on yourself and draw conclusions.
Medicinal properties
The healing power of “hairy” quartz is not limited to the fight against baldness, although it is very effective in this matter. Depending on the variety, the stone also treats the following ailments:
- With golden or reddish inclusions - helps in the treatment of problems of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, facilitates the manifestations of hormonal changes in the female body upon the onset of menopause.
- With black or green inclusions (including the Kola mineral) they treat all kinds of problems of the central nervous system and psycho-emotional nature - stress, depression, irritability, outbursts of anger, apathy, exhaustion and others. The same stones help get rid of the effects of radiation exposure.
All types of hairworm have a healing effect on the thyroid gland, protect their owner from viruses and airborne infections, and strengthen his immunity. A necklace made of stones is especially effective. Bracelets and rings with the mineral have a beneficial effect on the functioning of the stomach, liver, spleen and pancreas.
Areas of application
The unusual appearance of the mineral predetermined how it would be used by people. Rutile quartz has nothing to do with industry. More creative and elevated uses have been found for it.
The stone makes beautiful pendants, earrings, and bracelets.
Covered in legends, the “lock of Aphrodite” has become a symbol of love and passion, a talisman for inspiration and the development of psychic abilities.
But jewelry made from gemstones does not always have esoteric overtones. Many women wear hair products to complement their outfits.
The crystals are framed in silver, white or yellow gold. Cheaper metals are not used - they are considered to be incompatible with hairworms.
Talismans and amulets
Amulets with hairs are widely in demand in the modern market. Their main property that attracts people is attracting love into the life of the owner. At the same time, the effect of the stone differs in different cases:
- If a person is lonely, then the mineral will solve this problem - it will give friends, help improve relationships with relatives and find a soul mate.
- If the owner of the hair is already in a relationship, then the stone will strengthen and refresh them, if there are feelings, but they are a little “dusty.” Or it will destroy it completely, if there is nothing left to save, in order to open the way for new relationships.
To enhance the charms of the goddess of love, the hair is cut in the shape of a heart, supplemented with microscopic mirror elements, and worn on the chest, hidden from prying eyes.
- If a person is passionately, but not mutually, in love, then the “gift of Aphrodite” will tell him ways to conquer the object of his adoration and make him more attractive in his eyes.
- In the relationship of spouses who have chosen a hairy man as their talisman, a second honeymoon will begin, and problems that disrupt harmony and interfere with the couple’s happiness will resolve on their own. For these purposes, an untreated mineral without a frame is best suited.
The location of the ring with the hairy hair determines the strength of one or another influence. To get married, the ring must be worn on the middle finger of the right hand, to find a new love - on the same hand, but on the ring finger, and to strengthen existing feelings and maintain fidelity in the relationship - on the left hand (the finger does not matter).
Amulets with hairy hair also help:
- Reveal your own talents and put them into practice, which will be useful for creative people.
- To varying degrees, to see or anticipate future events. Some people will simply improve their intuition, while others, with a penchant for providence, will become full-fledged soothsayers.
- Find reliable protection from any magical influences - evil eye, love spells, damage and others. For this, a large stone is suitable, which you do not need to carry with you all the time, but can simply be stored at home.
Compatibility with Zodiac signs
Rutile quartz is suitable for most zodiac signs. The most favorable combination is with Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Libra and Aquarius. The stone will help representatives of these zodiac signs quickly gain strength, find inner harmony and develop their best qualities. It minimizes negative traits, making such a carrier more attractive.
This variety of quartz has a moderate positive effect on all remaining signs of the Zodiac, except Aries. People belonging to this zodiac sign will not be able to receive support from the amulet due to too great a difference in energy.
Compatibility with other stones
The hairworm belongs to the element of Air, but is friendly. There are many stones that are ideal for combination, including:
- pyrite;
- rhinestone;
- rauchtopaz;
- citrine;
- pyrope;
- amethyst;
- grossular;
- demantoid.
However, it must be taken into account that rutile quartz has a negative relationship with some minerals. For the amulet to be beneficial, the stone cannot be combined with topaz, sapphire, emerald and chrysoberyl. You should also avoid combining with pearls and aventurine, as they will absorb the energy of the hairworm.
Hair products and decorations
Hairy quartz is far from the most expensive mineral. Its cost is determined by the type, color and whimsicality of the pattern. The most expensive specimens are pure transparent stones with golden, black or green “hair”. In second place are saguenites - specimens of hairworms with inclusions in the form of movable triangles. The Kola variety is the cheapest. It is opaque or very cloudy, inclusions are not very visible. This mineral is considered decorative and is used for making souvenirs.
This is interesting!
Cost examples:
- In a well-known natural stones boutique, you can purchase the highest quality hairy quartz in round, oval or rectangular shapes in various sizes at prices ranging from 20 to 245 (almost 23 grams) dollars.
- In a simpler store you can buy small quartz stones with rutile and tourmaline inclusions, born in Brazil, at a ridiculous price of 4-6 dollars apiece. Larger and more interesting specimens cost $12-50 there.
- Hair bracelets without the use of metals cost 25-100 dollars, with brass - 45-50, with silver - 65-70, with gold - from 200 dollars.
- Brass earrings with a small stone - 5-10 dollars, silver - 80-150, gold - 285-600 dollars.
- Silver pendants – 80-150, and gold – 250-550 dollars.
Note
A gift from the goddess of love will definitely help a person if he strives with all his soul to change his life for the better, to find himself, to experience strong feelings. When a person is ready for change, all he has to do is open his eyes, heart and soul, rushing forward towards his goal. A unique, one-of-a-kind hairy cat will become a reliable assistant on the difficult path of life.

How to distinguish an original from a fake
Volosatik is an interesting and complexly patterned quartz. Growing it synthetically is a labor-intensive and unjustifiable process. Therefore, it is unrealistic to find synthetic hair on the shelves of jewelry stores. But they still make the stone. This is mostly done by jewelry dealers, imitating the original mineral with cheap plastic, slightly more expensive glass or crystal. Such a fake can be identified by the following signs:
- Hardness. A natural specimen will scratch the glass, but will not be harmed if you run a needle over it. A fake will not pass this test.
- Heating rate. Minerals heat up very slowly in your hands, while plastic and glass heat up almost instantly.
- Weight. Natural hair has a higher density than fake materials. With the same sample size, quartz will be heavier.
- Structure. When inclusions (rutile, tourmaline and others) grow into quartz, they take air with them, which is why there are always small and unequal bubbles in the structure of the natural stone. In fakes they are not observed or are strictly the same size and shape.
- Uniqueness. The product should be inspected. If there are several hairs in it, then it is necessary to visually compare them. In nature, there are never two identical stones. They may be similar, but still different. If the product contains completely identical stones, it means it is plastic or glass.
Place of Birth
The mineral can be found all over the world, but large deposits are few and far between. Most of the stones suitable for processing are mined in Brazil. The hairworms found there are large in size and have a large number of inclusions. In addition, this material is found in the following countries:
- Australia;
- USA;
- Russia;
- Madagascar;
- Pakistan;
- Norway.
Often high-quality samples were found in the Subpolar Urals, but at the moment most of the deposits located there are partially or completely depleted. For this reason, Russia cedes leadership to Brazil in the supply of rutile quartz.
How to care for stone
Hair care requirements do not go beyond standard measures for most gems:
- Individual storage - a separate segment in a box for stones, a case with soft upholstery or a suede bag.
- Careful wear – protection from bumps and falls, removing jewelry at night, and so on.
- Elimination of aggressive influences - chemicals (household products, cosmetics, perfumes), temperature changes and others.
- Regular cleaning - a soap solution, a brush, clean water and a dry soft cloth will be useful.
The hairworm also periodically requires energy cleansing. It is necessary to keep the stone in clean and cool spring or melt water (from the tap water will not work) for about 6 hours, dry and recharge in the sun (hold for 1-2 hours).
Areas of use
In ancient times, seals were cut out of hairs, but now the crystal is used to create jewelry and collectibles. The best specimens with interesting designs go to jewelers.
They are used to make bracelets, beads and rings, using silver or gold as a frame. Classic cut shapes are cabochon, stepped or beveled.
In addition to jewelry, quartz is used to create decorative items and magical attributes.
