Characteristics and rules for caring for 375 gold

The most popular among buyers are jewelry made of 375 and 585 gold. What is their difference? Let's try to compare these types of gold alloys.

Korloff ring

Many may immediately wonder why gold alloys are needed in general. The need for them is explained by the fact that pure gold is not used in jewelry production due to its softness. To solve this problem, other metals are added to gold to make the alloy hard and durable.

In color, 585 gold alloy is closest to pure gold.

The fineness indicated on a gold product means the proportion of pure gold in the alloy.

375 gold has greater hardness

Although many people associate lower pure gold content with lower quality products, in reality 375 gold is a harder and therefore more durable alloy than 585 gold.

Gold is a fairly soft metal, and its lower content in the alloy leads to increased hardness, and therefore wear resistance. For example, a 375 gold ring wears out more slowly than a 585 gold ring.

However, the wear resistance of the alloy depends not only on the content of pure gold in it, but also on the type and amount of other metals included in its composition. In addition, there are other factors that affect the strength of the alloy. Therefore, it is likely that a product made of 585 gold with high quality workmanship can be more durable.

What is the price

The price of low-grade gold depends on its value in its pure form. The price is set by the Central Bank of the Russian Federation. To calculate the cost of 375 samples, you need to multiply a gram of pure gold by 0.375, and you will know what price the alloy has at a certain moment. Pricing is influenced by the composition of the components included in the ligature.

The cost of a low-grade precious metal depends on the form in which it is sold - scrap or solid jewelry, as well as on the place of purchase and sale. 375 standard in a pawn shop is sold as scrap and is valued at a categorically low price. The approximate price will be 450 rubles per gram. On the market, the price per gram of gold metal with a hallmark of 375 units is 925 rubles. The highest price for scrap is 800–850 rubles. Finished jewelry costs 2500–2600 rubles.

375 gold is contraindicated for those who are allergic to nickel

This is the biggest drawback of 375 gold alloy - the nickel in its composition can cause an allergic reaction.

Because the percentage of nickel in this gold alloy is higher (compared to 585 and higher alloys), products made from it are more likely to cause skin irritation and other allergy symptoms.

Jewelry made of 585 gold practically does not cause allergic reactions, and yet people prone to allergies are recommended to test the product first.

Advantages and disadvantages

The positive properties of gold 375 marking include the following:

  1. Low cost of alloy products.
  2. The products are durable and wear-resistant.
  3. Beautiful metal color.

Disadvantages of inferior grade yellow metal:

  1. Jewelry is short-lived; a gray coating forms on its surface over time.
  2. In an aggressive environment, it oxidizes and stains appear on jewelry.
  3. If the ligature contains nickel, brass, or zinc, this may cause an unwanted side reaction in the form of an allergy.

Whether 375 gold blackens or not depends on the storage conditions (it cannot be stored in cardboard boxes, since the material contains sulfur, which causes the metal to blacken).

What to choose: 375 or 585 gold

  • It is impossible to say for sure which type of gold alloy is better. When choosing, there are many factors to consider, as well as individual preferences. If you want everyday jewelry that you will wear all the time, then it is better to opt for a product made from 375 gold - it is harder and more scratch-resistant. A ring made of 585 gold will wear out faster and become scratched if worn constantly. An additional advantage is the lower price of products made from 375 gold alloy.
  • As noted above, diamond jewelry is typically made from at least 585 gold alloy.
  • If you are allergic to nickel, it is best to avoid jewelry made from 375 gold and opt for jewelry made from 585 gold or a higher purity alloy.
  • As for appearance, it’s up to you to decide which of these types of gold looks more attractive, and whether it’s worth paying extra for a higher standard.

What does the test say?

The most important information that the sample carries is the percentage of precious metal contained in the finished alloy. This is very easy to determine: look at the sample value and divide by 10. The resulting number is an approximate percentage. So 375 gold contains approximately 37.5% gold or 375g. for 1000g. The hallmark that can be found on the alloy is state and hallmark. Having seen it, you can be sure that there is no deception in the sample.

Gold samples

What do the remaining 62.5% hide underneath? Typically this includes:

  1. Copper. It takes up almost half of the alloy.
  2. Silver. About 10%.
  3. Palladium. Approximately 4%.

Please note that this percentage is common but not always used. There are other alloy options - depending on the taste of the jeweler. Sometimes palladium may not be used at all, and the amount of copper may prevail over silver.

Due to the large number of “impurities”, this low-grade composition is sometimes jokingly called “gold-containing”, although in reality it does not lose its gold status.

How to independently distinguish from a fake

To distinguish a 375-carat product from a fake, standard and simple rules apply, which are also used in other gold samples. The easiest way is to bite the product with your teeth. This method will allow you to clearly identify a fake 375 sample, since it is quite hard. If you see a fake, the product will bend or a small dent will appear on it.

Another simple way that will allow you to distinguish a fake from a genuine product is to use a ceramic cup. Ceramics are much stronger than any gold alloy. If you rub your item against the bottom of a cup or plate that is made of ceramic, you will be able to see a yellow mark. If you have a fake in front of you, the mark will not be yellow, but will have a black tint.

Caring for jewelry

With proper care of any products, regardless of their cost and quality, they will serve the owner much longer, and their appearance will retain its attractive qualities over the years. You should maintain and look after your jewelry as carefully as people look after the condition of their teeth and their appearance.

Basic Rules

By regularly cleaning the products (at least once every few days), it will be possible to prevent the appearance of stains, abrasions, and also notice signs of tarnishing in time, which will minimize the possible negative influence of the environment. You should be guided by the following rules, common to all types of gold products:

  • Alkalis, acids and other caustic liquids that may be found in detergents, washing powders, nail polish removers, hair dyes and other chemical products are potentially hazardous to jewelry. Direct contact with them is undesirable even with a high gold content in the product, as this can change the color of the metal, as well as remove its shine and reflectivity.

  • If we are talking about sample 375, then it is better to remove such jewelry in advance before taking a bath or shower. Products with a higher content of precious metals are not afraid of water (including chlorinated water), but it is better to remove them just in case, so as not to fall into the flush hole of the sink or bathtub.
  • Cardboard boxes are not the best place to store jewelry, particularly gold. The fact is that due to the presence of sulfur in cardboard, the surface of jewelry may darken or even turn black over time (if left there for a long time). There are special boxes with a soft surface that are designed for storing jewelry. It is also not recommended to store several items in one box - they can scratch each other.
  • Timely cleaning of jewelry. It is better to take expensive and rare items to a jeweler for polishing. Although they do not fade over time, they may suffer from minor scratches and scuffs.

You need to be careful when caring for rings and jewelry set with stones. There are often cases when too zealous zeal during cleaning led to the stone falling out of the ring. In principle, this can happen not through the fault of the owner, but due to poor quality of the decoration.

What to do if they call from a number starting with code 375

When you receive a call from this number, we recommend that you pick up the phone and find out what issue you are being bothered about. Telephone scammers who massively use IP telephony usually bypass Belarusian numbers with the 375 code. They prefer numbers from Western Europe and Southeast Asia.

If the call you receive is of an advertising nature (you are offered to purchase any goods or services, invest money in dubious enterprises, etc.), then refuse the caller. In the future, ignore calls from this number. If you continue to receive annoying calls starting with +375, it would be wise to blacklist this number. This will save your time for solving other, more important tasks.

Demand

In the Russian Federation, “585” items are sold in large volumes, but it should be noted that jewelry with the “375” stamp is a worthy and promising alternative. But the variety of such jewelry is small, because there is little demand for them. A small amount of gold in jewelry makes it not respectable, since everyone today wants to look chic.

In addition, this precious material is not in demand, because jewelry made from it often loses its attractive appearance during use. A small content of precious metal makes jewelry wear-resistant and durable, but at the same time the metal’s ability to oxidize increases.

If you do not wear or care for items made of low-quality gold for a long time, they will darken and lose their shine, which will make them impossible to wear. Returning jewelry to its original appearance will be extremely problematic.

Another disadvantage of jewelry with the 375 mark is that it can cause allergies. This can be caused by the body’s high sensitivity to certain types of metals that are present in the precious material.

There is little precious metal in it, so there are many impurities that often provoke an allergic reaction on the skin.

Clear advantages of low samples

375 sample has a number of undeniable advantages, which would be appropriate to talk about in this article:

  • The ligature used in combination gives the final material good hardness, strength, and makes it less dense;
  • The elasticity of the alloy allows you to create amazingly beautiful bracelets and chains. Gold with such a mark is well soldered in the links, and therefore a chain or bracelet made from it will not only be elegantly made, but very durable;
  • Low price with good quality.

What compositions are there?

375 gold may vary significantly in composition and, accordingly, color and characteristics.

If you add about 60% copper to the alloy, it will have a reddish tint. Such a product quickly oxidizes and becomes covered with a dark coating. This is compensated by the high strength of the composition. Even small decoration elements will not be easy to break.

An alloy containing approximately 20% silver and 40% copper, the color will be pink. The metal will be a little less durable, but more ductile.

When silver and copper are mixed in equal parts, approximately 30% each, the alloy turns out to be rich yellow. Hardness will decrease, and ductility will accordingly increase. If there is approximately 40% silver and 20% copper, the color of gold will be even yellow.

A composition in which there is no copper and silver is 62.5% will turn out white. The strength will be significantly inferior to an alloy with the addition of copper.

To obtain a delicate creamy shade, approximately 40% palladium and 20% silver are added. This alloy is rare, and its cost is higher. The reason is that palladium is a fairly expensive metal.

Silver makes gold more ductile and malleable, and also lowers the melting point. Copper, in turn, increases the hardness of the alloy. At the same time, it does not impair its malleability and ductility. The more copper is added to gold, the more pronounced red tint it has.

How to care?

The best option would be not to engage in amateur chemistry, but to use special cleaning products such as “Aladdin”, “Unicum” or “Talisman” (not advertising).

There are dozens of these means. They are sold in hardware departments and jewelry stores. The cost varies from 150 to 600 rubles.

If you suddenly don’t want to go to the store, but really want to clean your favorite chain (ring, ring, grandfather’s cigarette case), then you can use the means at hand, which, as a rule, are found in every decent home.

For example, here is a good way:

  1. In a glass bowl, mix 250 ml of boiled water, 4 ml of ammonia and 1 tablespoon of washing powder without coloring additives. If you don't have powder, dishwashing detergent will do just fine.
  2. Mix all this thoroughly and completely immerse the gold product in the resulting mixture for 2-3 hours. Then we take it out, rinse it under clean running water and wipe it with a clean, dry cloth, preferably lint-free.

Another method is perfect for those who don’t have ammonia in the house:

  1. Choose dishes taking into account the fact that they will need to be heated, for example a metal mug or ladle.
  2. Lay a soft cloth on the bottom and place the gold item on it.
  3. Mix water and dishwashing detergent at the rate of 1 teaspoon of detergent per 200 ml of water. It is necessary that the product is completely recessed.
  4. Afterwards, heat over low heat for 7-10 minutes.
  5. Then remove the product, rinse with running water and wipe with a dry, clean cloth.

This method is well suited for cleaning red and yellow gold.

And one more method, for those who do not have not only ammonia in their home, but also dishwashing detergent:

  1. Mix 150-170 ml of water and 3 tablespoons of salt. She certainly is.
  2. Stir in a glass container until the salt is completely dissolved and immerse the product there for 12 hours.
  3. Then we take it out, rinse it under running water and wipe it off.

There is another option - trust the professionals and take the item to a jewelry workshop for cleaning.

Do not clean with soap, as it forms a greasy film on the surface of the product. Never use abrasives or products containing chlorine and active oxygen to clean gold.

How to avoid falling into scammers' networks?

Thanks to the popularity of white gold, a new type of jewelry scam has emerged. Gullible buyers are offered to buy inexpensively a product made of white metal, with an hallmark and an embossed hallmark - 925. People, delighted at the low price and the presence of a state hallmark, buy jewelry. But later it turns out that 925 is silver, not white gold. Therefore, always contact only serious jewelry stores, and do not hesitate to demand certificates confirming the quality of the products - every self-respecting seller should have them.

You should not try to save money by buying jewelry second-hand or at pawn shops - this can result in the loss of all your savings. Be careful, and then your white gold will delight you with its metallic shine for many years!

Where is this precious material used?

This precious metal is used to make chains, bracelets and other jewelry. In addition, watch cases and other elegant things that require a certain strength are made from this material. This material is also used for framing stones.

The degree of aesthetics, as well as the artistic appeal of products with the 375 hallmark, practically do not differ from things with more valuable hallmarks. In other words, the beauty of jewelry is not affected by the quality of the precious material.

Properties and features 375

375 standard, despite little interest in it, has its own characteristic pros and cons that you should know before deciding to purchase jewelry. Most often, the alloy (auxiliary metal alloys) includes copper and silver. In some cases, the composition may include palladium; It is also possible to add non-precious elements such as brass, zinc and nickel. The color indicates the percentage of these materials, with the following combinations possible:

  • Copper - 60.5%, silver - 2%. At this ratio, the product will have a red color.
  • Copper - 52.5%, silver - 10%. The red hue remains dominant, but it will be less saturated and bright.
  • If there is 16% silver and 46.5% copper, the jewelry takes on a pinkish tint.
