Brilliant erudition: 7 iconic jewelry with a rich history

Companies with a century-old history, unique works of jewelry and priceless heritage passed down from generation to generation.

Jewelry is an integral part of every person’s life, and even men in this regard have long been equal to women.

At the same time, many do not want to be content with even expensive jewelry, preferring jewelry from well-known jewelry brands. Who are they, the most famous creators of luxury jewelry?

Harry Winston

Ring with swivel center set with sapphires, diamonds and aquamarines

Hope's Famous Blue Diamond Necklace

The founder of the company (1890) was the father of the current owner, Harry Winston. And already in the middle of the last century, his jewelry “warmed” the necks and hands of many film stars. To this day, not a single passage along the red carpet is complete without an exclusive from Harry Winston.

Yes, but at one of the recent Met Gala, Jennifer Lopez shone in branded diamonds. And at any major auction, Harry Winston jewelry goes under the hammer for hundreds of thousands and even millions of dollars. For example, a luxurious 9-carat ruby exhibited by Christie's in 2013 sold for $3.9 million, making it one of the 10 most expensive rubies in the world.

In addition to jewelry, the brand produces luxury wristwatches. For example, the incredibly sophisticated and feminine Cherry Blossom or Midnight Diamond Stalactites with diamond tracks on the dial.

Buccellati

Fiori necklace by Buccellati: white and yellow gold, diamonds and emeralds

The brand was founded in Milan in 1919. The first owner of Buccellati is Mario Buccellati. Today his son, Gianmaria Buccellati, runs the business.

Buccellati jewelry is incredibly successful because it is truly unique. Among the products of the Italian brand you can find not only individual items: rings, earrings, bracelets, but also full-fledged thematic collections and lines of wedding jewelry.

Jewelry is created exclusively by hand. Jewelers' favorite materials are platinum and gold, which are generously inlaid with sapphires, green emeralds and, of course, magnificent diamonds.

It is noteworthy that the brand is experimenting with products: Buccelleti has not only classic jewelry, but even a gold smartphone case worth 200 thousand dollars.

4. BVLGARI

Year of foundation: 1884

A company called Bulgari was founded by the Greek Sotirios Bulgari, who eventually moved to Italy. In 1977, the Latin letter V appeared instead of U, as a symbol of the brand's roots. BVLGARI is the embodiment of flashy chic and prestige. One of the most recognizable pieces of jewelry is a wide ring with an engraved logo on the rim. A landmark collection was the Bulgari Serpenti Collection, which combines gold and platinum metal flakes.

The distinctive features of BVLGARI are the spirit of the Italian Renaissance, geometric motifs, Roman classicism, avant-garde and the use of multi-colored stones.

The influence of the Italian and Greek jewelry schools is clearly visible in the brand’s jewelry.

6. Bucelatti

Bucelatti was one of the first to present a series of jewelry cases for iPhone and iPad using yellow gold and diamonds. The company also produces silverware. The brand's masterpieces are recognizable due to the characteristic precious lace, the combination of geometry with smooth lines, and the characteristic metal texture reminiscent of expensive linen.

Van Cleef & Arpels

Van Cleef & Arpels brooch from the Seven Seas collection: sapphires, spinel, onyx, diamonds

Van Cleef & Arpels Ballerina brooch with sapphires and diamonds

Van Cleef & Arpels couldn't help but be included in the list of the most famous jewelry brands. The year the brand was founded is 1896. The imagination of the brand’s designers is simply amazing. Unique jewelry collections are imbued with motifs from nature: be it a marine theme (as in the Seven Seas collection) or a floral theme (as in the absolutely unique Maki watch with a hidden dial).

Of course, we cannot fail to mention the famous precious ballerinas created by the jewelers Van Cleef & Arpels. In the Peau d'Âne collection, inspired by Charles Perot's fairy tale "Donkey's Skin", they are especially beautiful.

The brand's jewelry is the brightest products made of platinum and noble white gold with generous inlay with precious stones. Dazzling examples include the luxurious winter range Diamond Breeze. However, the company's watches are not inferior in beauty: from the feminine Lady Jour des Fleurs to the truly fantastic Carpe Koï bracelet watch - Van Cleef & Arpels are meticulous about every precious stone in their creations.

However, classic jewelry and high jewelry are not the only strengths of the French brand. It is enough to look at the amazing automaton with the most tender fairy undine and a lotus flower to appreciate the full scale of the creative thought and abilities of local craftsmen.

Diadem of Marie Louise of Austria

close

100%

A wedding gift from Napoleon I to his second wife Marie-Louise of Austria, the tiara was made in 1810 in the jewelry workshop Etienne Nitot et Fils (“Etienne Nitot and Son”), on the basis of which the famous jewelry house Chaumet later emerged. To be honest, the diadem was only part of a whole parure of jewelry: in addition to it, the future empress was destined for earrings, a necklace and a comb made of emeralds and diamonds in gold and silver frames. In 1953, the jewelry company Van Cleef & Arpels bought the parure from the heirs of Marie-Louise. There, the items of the kit were awaiting separation.

The whereabouts of the comb are now unknown, the necklace and earrings are in the Louvre, and the most amazing fate awaited the diadem.

The emeralds were removed from it, used to make other jewelry (the fact that the gems were part of the empress's diadem made them even more expensive), and the empty spaces were filled with Persian turquoise. The tiara is now kept in the National Museum of Natural History in Washington.

Diamond bow of Empress Eugenie

close

100%

The last Empress of France, wife of Napoleon III Eugene, was a trendsetter in European fashions in the second half of the 19th century. Every outfit, every piece of jewelry is a work of art worthy of being exhibited in the best museums in the world. For example, in the Louvre - like this brooch - a diamond bow with movable tassels.

French jeweler Francois Cramer, who made the bow in 1855, intended it to be a clasp for a diamond belt.

However, the empress had her own plans for this - and through the efforts of another jeweler, the bow turned into a brooch with tassels. In 1887, after the fall of the empire, the royal jewels were put up for auction - and the brooch was purchased for Mrs. Caroline Astor, a noble American woman, the wife of a wealthy businessman. The Astor family owned the brooch until 1990, when it was decided to sell it at auction. However, it was sold only in 2008. The brooch was bought by the Friends of the Louvre society and the royal jewels returned to Paris.

Tiara of Princess Katharina Henckel von Donnersmarck

close

100%

Featuring 11 pear-shaped Colombian emeralds, a diamond flower and leaf design and cushion-cut yellow-green diamonds, the tiara is the most luxurious ever owned by a non-royal person. Its owner was Katharina Henckel von Donnersmarck, née Ekaterina Sleptsova, the second wife of the German industrial magnate Prince Guido Henckel von Donnersmarck.

However, the history of emeralds is still royal: the owner of the precious stones was the Empress Eugenie, already familiar to us, and before her, it is assumed, they could have belonged to the Indian Maharaja. There were not 11, but 25 - and all of them were sold after the fall of the French Empire in 1872. A little later, 11 of them were bought by Guido Henckel von Donnersmarck.

It is not known for certain who made the tiara around 1900; there is no identifying mark on it that would make it possible to find out the name of the master. However, experts at the Sotheby's auction house suggest that it could have been made by Joseph Chaumet or Frederic Boucheron, the founders of the jewelry houses of the same name (Chaumet and Boucheron) and the best jewelers of the late 19th century.

In 2011, the tiara was sold at auction to an anonymous buyer for $12.7 million.

Wandering Pearl

close

100%

Another jewel with a royal history. Peregrina is the name of a pear-shaped pearl weighing 55.95 carats, which is about 500 years old. It was caught on the Pearl Islands in the Gulf of Panama in the mid-16th century. The first owner of the pearl was the administrator of the Spanish colony in Panama, Don Pedro de Temes, who presented it to the future (at that time) King of Spain Philip II, and granted freedom to the slave who found it. Thus began the journey of the world's largest pearl through royal breasts.

Philip II gave the pearl to Mary Tudor - she wore it as a pendant to a brooch, as you can see by looking at her portrait by Anthony More. After her death, the pearl returned to the Spanish crown - until Napoleon Bonaparte's brother Joseph became king of Spain. In 1813, when he was forced to leave the country, Joseph took with him some jewelry, including a pearl. That's when she got her name La Peregrina - The Wandering One.

The wanderer wandered for a long time - she fell into the hands of Napoleon III, then an aristocrat from Great Britain, the Duke of Abercorn from the Hamilton family, fell behind the sofa, and got lost at a ball in Buckingham Palace.

In 1969, the pearl was sold at Sotheby's to Richard Burton, who bought it for Elizabeth Taylor for Valentine's Day.

The great actress knew a lot about jewelry - her collection included the famous Taj Mahal diamonds and the Krupp diamond. A wandering pearl adorned a necklace of diamonds and rubies, commissioned by Elizabeth Taylor by Cartier. In 2011, it was sold at Christie's for approximately $11 million.

Panther parure by Nina Dyer

close

100%

The beauty, a model of Anglo-Indian origin, was married twice. Both times - for the richest men of their time and both times - for quite a short time. Her second husband was Sadruddin Aga Khan, a prominent political figure of Shiite origin, who was born in Paris, conducted public activities related to refugee rights, and held various positions at the UN. The marriage to Nina Dyer - she converted to Islam and received the name Shirin - lasted from 1957 to 1960, and during this time Nina compiled a good collection of jewelry.

Her main passion was panthers. Panther fur coats. Living panthers are two noble animals. But the main thing is the jewelry in the form of panthers, produced by Cartier.

Bracelets inlaid with diamonds interspersed with onyx, a brooch-pin with a panther's head, matching the design of the bracelets, and a ring. The jewelry, unfortunately, did not bring happiness to the beauty - Nina suffered from depression and committed suicide in 1965 at the age of 35. The jewelry was sold at Christie's auction in 1969 - they were bought by Cartier themselves.

Tiara "Halo" by Cartier

close

100%

The modest diamond tiara of the famous jewelry house was made in 1936 and purchased by the Duke of York, the future British King George VI and father of the current Queen Elizabeth II, for his wife, Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. The delicate jewelry with 888 diamonds (739 of them brilliant cut, 149 baguette) has an uncomplicated fate. At the age of 18 (that is, in 1944), the future Queen Elizabeth II received it as a gift from her mother.

She herself, it seems, was not eager to put it on, but she let others wear it. For some time, Elizabeth's younger sister, Princess Margaret, wore a tiara. It was then worn by Elizabeth's daughter Princess Anne. Since 1970, the tiara has not appeared in public for quite some time, but in 2011, the not-so-favorite tiara of the British royal family had its finest hour: it adorned the head of the happy bride. This is what Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge wore to her wedding.

Princess Diana's ring

close

100%

Kate Middleton inherited more than just the tiara. The white gold ring with an oval-cut Ceylon sapphire framed by 14 diamonds was chosen by Lady Diana Spencer herself on the occasion of her engagement to Prince Charles. The choice of the future princess puzzled the royal family: the fact is that the ring was not made to order, it was made by the Garrard jewelry house (by the way, one of the oldest in the world), it cost £28 thousand at that time, and it was bought at in the opinion of representatives of the British royal family, anyone could -

It's not good to buy a ring that any commoner can afford!

After the death of Princess Diana, the ring passed to her son William and waited for his happiness when he decided to get married. Kate Middleton only had to change her size slightly.

Graff

Graff tiara with yellow and colorless diamonds

Ring with yellow and brownish-orange teardrop-shaped diamonds

Although the Graff jewelry brand appeared relatively recently, in 1960, this does not prevent it from enjoying enormous success around the world. And the fact that the company’s owner, Lawrence Graff, ranks 4th among the richest people who made a fortune in diamonds is an excellent confirmation of this. The brand's motto is “luxury, exclusivity and chic.”

Graff's favorite stone is a large, perfectly cut diamond. Therefore, it is quite expected that within the walls of his workshops some of the highest quality, largest and most expensive diamonds in the world were born:

  • the largest emerald-cut diamond is the 302-carat Lesedi La Rona, derived from a 1,109-carat diamond valued at US$51 million;
  • the world's largest heart-shaped diamond, the Venus, weighing nearly 119 carats;
  • 132 carat yellow diamond “The Golden Empress” or The Golden Empress

All Graff jewelry is handcrafted by the finest artisans in jewelry making.

Tiffany & Co.

Tiffany Diamond Wedding and Engagement Ring

Silver caf bracelet from Tiffany

Tiffany is a jewelry brand that perhaps everyone knows. Its history began in 1837. At the same time, the world became acquainted with Tiffany’s favorite colors: all jewelry was placed in gift boxes of an unusual shade of turquoise and soft blue. The company does not change its traditions, and today it is these colors that make the brand incredibly recognizable.

Jewelry from Tiffany is platinum, gold and silver with precious stones - ideally combining impeccable recognizable style and laconicism in each collection.

In addition to the main regularly released lines, the brand annually releases a number of high jewelry items to replenish the Blue Book collection.

And, of course, Tiffany jewelry is a regular participant in the main events of the year: the Oscars, the Golden Globes, and the Met Gala.
