Colors and varieties
There are three types of gems - chrysoberyl itself, alexandrite and tsifoman (“cat’s eye”).
Simple chrysoberyl
Chrysoberyl can be yellow, wine-yellow or yellow-green, different shades of green (grass, asparagus) and green with shades (blue, golden). It may be colorless, but this variety is not very valued, since it is significantly inferior to diamonds and other similar gems.

Digital man ("cat's eye")
Digital - most often golden-yellow with a bluish tint. The second name “cat's eye” is due to the presence, after processing using the cabochon technique, of a silver-white line that moves when the stone is turned.

Price
Chrysoberyl is an expensive stone due to its rarity and beauty. Transparent crystals are especially expensive.
The price of chrysoberyl depends on:
- appearance;
- cutting difficulties;
- size;
- mining sites.
The cost of 1 carat of alexandrite is - 6000–20000 $.
For 1 carat of cymophane you will have to pay $5,000 (if the stone weighs 5 carats) and $12,000 (if the weight is 7 carats).
Cymofan price:
- premium quality - from 1150 to 3500 $ per carat ;
- top quality - from 800 to 6500 $ per carat ;
- lower quality - from 50 to 900 $ per carat .
Examples of prices in Russian online stores:

How to distinguish an original from a fake
Since chrysoberyl is a rare and expensive gem, it is quite often counterfeited, trying to sell colored glass or plastic to gullible buyers “at a super-best price” under the guise of a “powerful curiosity.” It's quite easy to distinguish them:
- Glass or plastic cannot be compared with chrysoberyl in terms of hardness. They are easily scratched with a needle, but stone is not. You need to ask the seller to conduct such a check and see his reaction. If he refuses, then you shouldn’t buy the jewelry.
- The glass in your hands will heat up almost instantly, the real gem will remain cool for a long time.
- It is necessary to evaluate the color of the stone. In low-grade fakes, uneven coloring is almost always visible.
- A low price is in itself a sign of a scam, since natural chrysoberyl and its varieties are never cheap.
On the shelves of even elite jewelry stores you can find synthetically grown chrysoberyls. This is not a crime, since it is impossible to call an artificial stone a fake. It is the same gem, only created in the laboratory by fusing beryllium salts, aluminum, boric acid and calcium carbonate. A synthetic gem is often even more beautiful than a natural one and at the same time costs less, but it does not have any magical or healing powers.
It is also possible to distinguish synthetics from the original:
- By appearance. A synthetic stone is ideal in structure, while a natural specimen, when examined under a magnifying glass, will reveal small defects.
- By price. The cost of synthetics is always lower.
- According to the stone quality certificate. This document will necessarily indicate the synthetic origin of the stone; at a minimum, the name will be put in quotation marks - “chrysoberyl”.
Origin story
Mention of the stone as a type of beryl is found in Pliny the Elder, an ancient Roman historian, encyclopedist, and author of the famous ancient treatise “Natural History”. From the Latin “berillus” comes the Italian. “brillare” (“to shine”), which in turn became the basis of the word “diamond”. Diamond-cut chrysoberyls are very beautiful and have a pronounced shine.
Helpful information
In Ancient Rus' the stone was known as “zaberzat”. Detailed study of chrysoberyl began in the 18th century.
Alexandrite was found in the 19th century and named after the Russian Emperor Alexander II. Thanks to its “royal” name, as well as its unusual properties and rarity, jewelry with alexandrite was coveted by the court nobility.
How to care for stone
Caring for chrysoberyl is standard; you need to:
- Remove jewelry if you plan to come into contact with any chemicals - cosmetics, perfumes, detergents and cleaners.
- Before going to bed, also remove jewelry and store it in a separate soft case to prevent damage to the stone by harder corundums and to protect soft gems from damage by chrysoberyl itself.
- Periodically clean the stone by placing it in a mild soap solution for 10-20 minutes, then rinsing it with plenty of clean water and wiping it dry with a suede cloth.
