Why are additives needed in the plates?

However, there is a big disadvantage when the battery is almost fully charged; a rapid process of electrolysis begins to occur, that is, the release of gas. Water from the electrolyte evaporates and the level in the “banks” drops. Therefore, such batteries need an “eye and an eye”; they cannot be made maintenance-free (they will simply burst when charged)
CALCIUM ( Ca). To reduce the process of electrolysis and gas evolution, they began to add “Calcium” to the plates. With this design, the electrolysis process began much later, when the battery was already charged, that is, practically no bubbling occurred. Therefore, a large number of such batteries are now made maintenance-free; if there is evaporation, it is returned through a special labyrinth back to the banks. That is, it requires a minimum of maintenance and is VERY good for beginners. However, the big minus is not resistant to deep discharges; literally 3-4 carry away 50% of the capacity
HYBRID (combination of Sb + Ca). Here the engineers decided to take advantage of both Calcium and Antimony technology (one plate is like this, the other is like this), boils little, and is more or less resistant to deep discharges.
